Yu Yunicorn First Impressions

  • Set of documents
  • Power adapter
  • Micro USB cable for charging (No, its a regular one and not a Type C)
  • Earphones
  • And a pin to eject the SIM tray
  • And, of course the phone.
  • The design of Yunicorn is familiar with many of the phones sporting a similar design. Around 170 grams, the phone is a tad heavy and is around 8.1mm in thickness. The brushed alloy metal back with horizontal lines gives it a characteristic look and Yu says with time, the metallic back will get better during usage. Yunicorn has a 5.5inch IPS display with a fullHD resolution and has a 2.5D glass design. The display is pretty good and there is even a monochrome setting which am addicted to now. Even the pictures you take when the monochrome turned on is black and white. Powering the Yunicorn is a Mediatek Helio P10 chipset, which is an octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz. Not definitely a high blazing SoC but not bad either. A dual-core Mali-T860 GPU is in charge of graphics. A 4GB of RAM completes the setup. On the storage side, there is a 32GB of internal storage with some 25GB user available. Yunicorn has a hybrid dual-SIM and one SIM can be replaced with a microSD card. It also supports OTG and you can access files directly from a microUSB port. There is no bloatware and the Yunicorn runs on Android Lollipop, very close to the stock Android. Yu says it runs on Android on Steroids (AoS). It’s mid 2016, we are talking about the probable name for Android N, and it’s a pity that we see Lollipop in the device. Around Yu, the service platform of Yu is tightly integrated and Yu has big plans for it integrating many services of many startups they had invested last year, Around Yu could be a great differentiator for Yu and more new services to come soon including healthcare services. The fingerprint sensor is at the front and it also aids as a home button but there is also on-screen navigation buttons. The camera setup includes a 13MP rear camera with 5 piece lens setup and f/2.2 aperture and a 5M{ front camera with f/2.0 aperture. It supports fullHD video recording and playback. A 4000mAh battery is quiet a healthy sign and I been using this phone for few days and the battery backup is brilliant. I will come up with a battery test video very soon. This is the first impression of the Yunicorn, what I really like about is the solid build quality, the lag free OS , Around Yu services, the battery life. Not used for a longer time to pick the low points so soon, will test for a while and figure them out. Look forward to our review knockdown shortly.]]>
