While there are new Smartphones raining in almost every other day, it's not often you see a phone that would revolutionize the industry, giving it a new direction and the road map for the future. Vivo Nex is one such mobile that makes revolutionary an understatement. When Vivo Apex was showcased with an elevating selfie camera, many people while appreciating the bold move from Vivo also dismissed it as an impractical device which would remain in the concept stage. Vivo proved them wrong with the launch of the truly flagship Smartphone Vivo NEX which was the progression of the Apex that was made real and stunning. Let's see the top 5 amazing Vivo NEX features and also additional 15+ FunTouch UI tricks and tips you should know that makes this Smartphone special.

Elevating Selfie Camera

This is undoubtedly the crowd puller feature of the Vivo Nex, the pop up selfie camera. Initially when I started using the phone, I would have just popped up the mechanized selfie camera a zillion times just for fun. It’s mesmerizing watching a motorized action in your Smartphone, which we don’t get to use in other mobiles. The camera elevates effortlessly when you open the selfie mode in the camera app and sinks in when you close the camera app or shift to the rear camera mode. To top it, the movement is also accompanied by a pop up sound albeit a faux one but nevertheless it adds the dramatic feel of the camera movement. The camera app also has a setting for the pop-up sound where you can mute it or opt for a Sci-Fi or rhythmic sound accompaniment.
Apparently, the elevating camera module is sturdily built and also pop up within 2 seconds of opening the selfie mode. Pretty neat and one of a kind implementation.

Screen SoundCasting and Hidden Sensors

While the elevating camera takes the limelight, there is another less talked but equally interesting technology that has been adapted on the Vivo Nex , the screen sound casting technology. Yes, in case you have not noticed yet, the Nex phone has done away with one of the most prominent part in every Smartphone in the world – the ear piece speaker. So how does the sound transmitted then? Vivo Nex uses the in-display sound casting, where the entire display turns out to be a speaker of a sort. Interesting right?! This also helps in making the phone truly bezel-less.
The Screen SoundCasting tech uses bone conduction to transmit audio waves. The first generation of Mi Mix had a similar technology but Vivo has fine tuned it and wriggled out the audio quality issues. So if you position your ear on the top half of the display, middle or bottom half or turn the phone upside down, you will still get to hear what the person at the other end says.
In technical terms, the science behind the in-display Sound casting technology is made possible by piezoelectric transducer placed between two metal plates. When sound waves strike one or both plates, they vibrate, which translates into waveform similar to sound waves. These sound waves are sent to the display, rather than to the speaker. In short, the technology converts the entire display into a speaker.
What about the sensors? The proximity sensors, the ambient light sensors? The proximity sensor sits neatly at the very edge of the screen and Vivo uses a ultrasonic tech to adjust the brightness.

In-display Fingerprint Sensor

Vivo pioneered the in-display fingerprint technology in their Vivo X21 Smartphone, the updated and improved second generation of the technology is implemented on the Vivo Nex. The fingerprint sensor is under the display and it looks ultra futuristic when it lights up and the animation that goes with it. There is also a choice of three animation you can choose. Additionally, the settings also gives us an option to keep the fingerprint sensor area always lit up or only when needed.

Ultra Full View Design

So when you have a pop up selfie camera, hidden sensors, in-display speaker you have the entire screen real estate for the display and that is what the Vivo Nex offers , a truly ultra fullview display with bezel-less design. It offers a stunning screen-to-body ratio of 91.24% which I really fell in love with this phone. It is perfect for watching movies and playing games offering a truly immersive experience.
The Vivo Nex offers 6.59 inches, Super AMOLED display with fullHD+ resolution. There is a very slim bezels – 2.16 mm on the top; 5.08 mm on the bottom; and 1.71mm on each side that makes the display almost bezel less.
I am quiet addicted to PUBG mobile these days and when you play on the NEX screen, the other Smartphone displays fails to excite you.

Dedicated AI button

Another notable addition to the NEX is a new button on the left side – the AI button. It can be used to launch the Google Lens camera or Google assistant. While the Google Lens can also be accessed within the camera app, the quick way when you want to reach it is a simple press on the new hardware button and it triggers the Google Lens camera.

Dual Engine Quick Charging

The Nex comes with a 4000mAh battery. The battery life is pretty good for a flagship Smartphone and can easily sail through a day which is a rare for flagship Smartphone these days. Further more, there is a dual engine quick charging and the box comes with a 22 watts charger. A 30 minutes charge can push from 0% to 50% and one hour can raise the bar to 90% which is pretty good.

Vivo V9 is one of the first wave of Android Smartphones to come with the controversial "notch" design. To notch or not is not the only question but to answer everything about this newly launched Smartphone, read our Vivo V9 review.

Vivo V9 Box contents

It’s not just the notch or the tall design but Vivo V9 has got a complete makeover. The rear is a compelling invitation to check out this Smartphone. Its super glossy and looks totally different from the previous generation V7.

That extra glossiness does come with a compromise, it is super fingerprint magnet. The sides are smooth and the edges gently curved, it gives a good feel when you hold it. The rear has the 16-megapixel camera, LED flash, fingerprint sensor and the Vivo branding.
The bottom is bustling with speaker grille, microUSB port, microphone and a 3.5mm audio jack. The top is devoid of any ports. It’s high time USB type-C finds place, hopefully at least the next iteration in the V series would hopefully get it but for now, its microUSB.

The right side has the volume and power button, while the left side houses the ejectable pin tray. Vivo V9 is a dual-SIM 4G VoLTE phone that can also accommodate a microSD card.
Overall, I have no complaints on Vivo V9 design but yes, a metal casing would have been a more contemporary clothing. Inspite of that, the phone looks premium no second opinion about it.

Vivo V9 Display

6.3 inches IPS LCD display

1080 x 2280 pixels

400 ppi density

18:9 aspect ratio

The tech community is divided over the notch effect, with almost the majority cringing about it. I have a different opinion though, yes the iPhone took it mainstream with the iPhone X but let’s not forget it was the Essential phone that introduced it. The notch is here for a reason and is here to stay for a while till another workaround is found like what Vivo demonstrated with Vivo Apex in the recent World Mobile Congress. When we love edge-less display a compromise has to be made. Either we can go bold like Mi Mix series by moving the selfie to the bottom (which I cringe about) or live with a notch for time being, I would prefer the notch than having to handle the front camera in an awkward bottom space.

Vivo V9 Software – The FunTouch UI

The V9 runs on Android Oreo out of the box with Vivo’s own FunTouch UI layered upon. If you are a first time Vivo user, you would find the interface quiet unlike the typical Android experience. The control center is accessed by swiping from bottom up similar to iPhone. It takes a bit of time to get used to. The UI offers tons of experience and you can check the video I have done on the top Vivo V9 features which list everything you should know.
To quickly recap the Vivo V9 features, you can:

Navigation keys can be replaced with navigation gestures

Indulge on DND mode while playing with the game mode

enable Motorbike mode while driving

record incoming calls

enable live beauty mode for whatsapp or messenger video calls

check the notifications by waving your hand above the display

take three fingerscreenshot and more.

For more exhaustive list of features, watch the video below.
https://youtu.be/DiAsAwRuHy8

Vivo V9 Fingerprint Sensor

The fingerprint sensor is placed at the rear and it works very accurately and is quiet fast too. The V9 also supports app lock and you can secure and unlock the apps with your enrolled finger.

Vivo V9 Face Recognition

V9 also supports face recognition. While it may not be as fast as the fingerprint sensor it does work fairly well. Additionally, it also supports app lock, so the secured apps can be unlocked with your face, which is pretty neat add-on. The UI also offers a raise to wake screen option which makes face recognition work better without having to press the power button to wake up the screen, so lift the phone, the screen wakes up, look at it and it unlocks, cool trick here!

Vivo V9 Hardware and Performance

Qualcomm MSM8953-Pro Snapdragon 626

Octa-core 2.2 GHz Cortex-A53

4GB RAM

Adreno 506

64GB storage / expandable

4G VoLTE

Adreno 506 battery

Sensors: Accelerometer, light, orientation, gyroscope, proximity, magnetic

If you are wondering what are the other phones that use SD 626, there is Moto Z2 Play, Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro and 10.or G from Amazon’s Tenor brand. Of all these phones, of course V9 has got the contemporary looks. But looks apart, how does this hardware perform? Let’s dig it out. I been using the Vivo V9 for over 2 weeks now and this is based out of that experience.
For normal usage, the V9 works like charm. The call quality is good and the speaker quality is good too while playing games which I did a lot thanks to the PUBG mobile. The Snapdragon 626 is a decently agile chip to handle even the heavy games, though for a keen gamer there will be slight frame rate drops while playing Asphalt 8 and Nova 3 but the bottom line, all these games are playable and you won’t find the phone huff puffing. Even hours of gaming does not heat up the device at any alarming rate even at this summer, which is a good news.
About the software optimisation and memory management, its a mixed bag. The phone does some aggressive background app management, so much that if the truecaller is idle for a while, it shuts it off that next time when a call comes. hence making the app ineffective. Vivo could relax it up with a software update and probably they would be doing it.
Battery is yet another decent performer of V9, I was initially sceptical about the 3200 mAh battery considering the phone has a larger display area and a fullHD+ resolution, but in my use which can be rated as a medium usage, the phone battery lasted for close to 18 hours, which I think is a decent life.

Vivo V9 Camera

24-megapixel (Front camera)

16MP+5MP (Rear camera)

As usual the focus is on the selfie camera, the Vivo (along with Oppo) with their high pitched marketing made selfie capability an important factor when buying a camera. Nothing much has changed in the megapixel count compared to the previous generation V7 and it retains the same 24-megapixel at the front. This time though there is a portrait mode both for the front and rear. The selfies are much better though and I would rate the pictures take with the front camera higher than the rear camera. I liked the portrait mode in selfies and they were decently good in the edges.

The bokeh at the rear is decent, though at times its hit or miss, with frayed edges appearing in some pictures, though at most time it did work decently well. The rear camera pictures are more natural with realistic color reproduction. A bit of meddling with the saturation and contrast would have made it more vibrant or lively. If you like natural reproduction, what you see is what you get here. The dynamic range could have been better, even the HDR doesn’t boost the levels much. The videos can be taken up to 4K, which is pretty good. The video quality is good enough too though it lacks image stabilisation.
As usual there is face beauty modes with 6 levels for those who love a smooth makeover on their face. Apart from this the camera app offers professional mode, ultraHD mode, Doc scanner, Slo-mo and time lapse.
To add fun elements, there is AR stickers built-in so you don’t need third party apps for the little crazier pictures.

Vivo V9 to buy or not?

What works for V9:

Impressive display

Good design with glossy back

Face recognition works good and Face app lock is a bonus

Decent battery life

Impressive audio output

Better selfies

Modern overall look and feel

Dedicated microSD card

4K video

What doesn’t work for V9:

Easy to gather smudges at the rear

RAM management could be better optimized

It has been a good year for Vivo in India , as per market analyst firm like Counterpoint and Canalys, the company has secured third position in the Indian Smartphone market in the first quarter of 2017 securing a neat 10% market share. The surge is largely due to its single minded focus on offline channels and the marketing blitzkrieg along with its brilliant tapping of the selfie craze that many of the smartphone users are fond of. The Vivo V5 and V5 Plus sold on the selfie highlights and now they have added V5S to their portfolio. V5s though is not much different from the Vivo V5, it only augments on the internal storage, slight aesthetic improvement and improved camera alg0irthms.
Like the V5, the V5s also features a 20-megapixel moonlight LED light promising a better selfie experience, does it deliver ? Let’s find out in this review along with what changes it brings over the V5.

Its surprising that Vivo had opted for a polycarbonate body instead of metal or glass that is in vogue now but on the positive side, the polycarbonate would fare better and avoid dents that a metal body might embrace during falls 0r the cracks a glass body might take. Honestly, the faux-metal does a very neat job and you need to be told that it is plastic and not really a metal body. Aesthetically looking at it, irrespective of the casing, it looks good. The V5s has the design flow and smoothness that is very familiar of its own other models and from the staples of the competition like the Oppo F1s. Its a clean design with good ergonomics. The design language has so far worked for Vivo so they had no reasons to change it at least not with V5s as yet.
The sides are smooth and the edges gently curved, it gives a good feel when you hold it. The antenna lines are similar to what we have seen in V5 Plus and gives a neat look. The rear has the camera, LED flash and Vivo branding.

The bottom is crowded with speaker grille, microUSB port, microphone and a 3.5mm audio jack. The top is devoid of any ports.

The right side has the volume and power button, while the left side houses the ejectable pin tray. Vivo V5s is a dual-SIM 4G VoLTE phone that can also accommodate a microSD card but its a hybrid dual-SIM so either you accommodate two SIMs or sacrifice the second SIM for a microSD card.

Overall, I have no complaints on Vivo V5s design but yes, a metal casing would have been a more contemporary clothing but in any case you would never know unless told about it.

I expected the V5s to have a fullHD display but Vivo has retained the same display as it was in V5. While many companies have made fullHD a mainstay in models in mid-segment and even Oppo and Gionee have opted for their latest devices in this segment, Vivo is still sheepish to change. Not that the HD resolution is bad but a fullHD would have read better on sheet. In practical scenario, Vivo has done a rather fine job with its display. The display has a punch and the colors are well saturated with black rich. The touch sensitivity and responsiveness is very good, the viewing angles are great too!
The display setting has minimal controls and there is a blue filter like in most phone these days and Vivo calls it global eye protection ( a rather elaborate term!)

Software – The FunTouch UI

While the base is Android Marshmallow, Vivo almost make it indistinguishable with its heavy apple inspired UI , the FunTouch OS . The biggest unlearn-learn is getting used to the quick access settings which needs a swipe up from bottom of the screen or long pressing the menu button. Again the recent apps are nested in the control panel below and can the icons can be scrolled horizontally and swiped up to close the running apps.
The FunTouch OS has its own share of quirky features, my favourite being S-Capture which offers some awesome screenshot capabilities, gesture dial, some smart gesture options and a Smart click that allows you to turn the Volume down key to be assigned a task like opening an app or turning on flash light.
The V5s also gets a new feature in vogue in many phones now- App Clone or popularly known as dual apps feature. The set up is not straight forward and you need to go to the edit mode of the homescreen to clone apps. While I had facebook, Instagram and Twitter running in my phone, I could duplicate only WhatsApp and none other apps. So if you have two SIMs in your phone, you can run two WhatsApp accounts associated with both the SIMs.

I have done a separate post on interesting features Vivo V5s has to offer and you can take a look at it, if you are interested. The Vivo inspite of the heavy customization doesn’t slow down the phone and manages to be nimble.

Hardware and Performance

MediaTek MT6750 processor

1.5GHz octa-core

4GB RAM

Mali T860 GPU

64GB storage / expandable

4G VoLTE

3000mAh battery

Sensors: Accelerometer, light, orientation, gyroscope, proximity, magnetic

Now we head to the crucial part of the review most would be interested – the performance. Let’s be honest, the hardware the Vivo V5 doesn’t excite me. It’s pretty old for my personal liking. But that doesn’t mean it would be a sluggish performer.
I been using the Vivo V5s as my primary device for a week now. For normal usage, the V5s works like charm. It can handle multi tasking and for most part due to the lack of one click to close all background apps, I end up using the phone with multiple apps running parallely and it managed to handle the load. The call quality is good and I really liked the keyboard spacing which was very convenient and smooth.
When it comes to gaming, it was not bad at all. I could run Asphalt 8 at the highest graphic settings, though for a keen gamer there will be slight frame rate drops but the bottom line, it was playable. So did NOVA 3. So it was a mixed bag, barring few games, the Vivo V5s was able to play almost all games, heavy ones included but it also struggled with few selected games.
When it comes to audio, the V5s lives up to its reputation. Speaker position in many phones come in way of game play , but not in the case of V5s. Plus, thanks to the AK4376 dedicated Hi-Fi audio chip the the audio output is brilliant. The Hi-Fi audio setting when you listed with earphones on makes for a great listen.
The fingerprint sensor of the Vivo V5s is one of the most reliable sensors I have come across and is also fastest. Apart from unlocking the phone, you can also secure apps with fingerprint sensor.
Battery is yet another star performer of V5s, even the V5 gave me a good battery life and this one inspite of having the same battery scored a notch better than that. On a medium usage with WiFi and dual SIM with a Jio 4G VoLTE on constantly, I could get a full day easily. A let down though is the lack of USB Type-C.

Vivo V5s camera

Front camera:

20-megapixel

Sony IMX 376 sensor

F/2.0 aperture

5P lens

1080p videosta capability

Soft LED light

Face beauty mode 6.0

The star selling point of the Vivo V5s is its 20 megapixel front facing camera that comes equipped with a soft LED light. Unlike the standard flash that fires while shooting a pic, the moonlight flash (that’s what Vivo calls it) in auto mode turns on under low-light conditions as a soft light even before you click and stays on till you close the camera app. The light is not harsh and gives a natural glow to your face without straining eyes and gives a good highlight.
Vivo has done a better job at the camera algorithm in the V5s, the pictures are remarkably better than the V5. The selfies come out with great detailing , even when you zoom in you can get good details. For the selfie lovers who love ‘beautification’ , the face beauty mode 6.0 offers up to 100 levels and works neatly. The camera on V5s strikes a good note and that is what Vivo V5s sells and it works well as its target customers would want it to.
Rear camera:

13-megapixel rear camera

PDAF

LED flash

Only very few front camera steal the limelight in camera phones where the rear almost always bag bigger mega pixel count but not in Vivo V5’s case. While it is out shadowed by the front camera, it does deliver a very good output. What surprised more is the video quality of the V5s , it is one of the better Smartphone video camera I have come across in recent times in this segment.

Vivo V5s to buy or not?

Say Yes to V5s for:

Good display inspite of 720 pixels resolution

Finger print sensor is accurate and very fast

Good battery life

Impressive audio output

The camera both selfie and rear got much better than the V5.

Frankly I expected V5s to be a better worthy upgrade to Vivo V5 but then it doesn’t seem to be. The S in V5s is basically Storage and double of it. Between V5s and V5 it makes sense to buy the V5s at least for the double storage it offers but also, somewhere I feel Vivo has done a bit of optimization to this device that seems to work better now.]]>
