Last few years have seen a tectonic shift in the Smartphone industry – the technology has been widely democratized and affordable for the masses. Now brands like Realme are in the forefront to deliver more at smart pricing and Realme X2 Pro is their latest offering that promises a true flagship experience complete with 50W fast charging and 90Hz refresh rate display at a fair price. In this Realme X2 Pro review, let’s unravel everything it has to offer.

Design and Build Quality of Realme X2 Pro

I got here the Neptune blue colour variant, while it is also available in Lunar white colour option. Personally I liked the eye-candy white colour variant with pearl-like gradient finish but has to settle with the Blue variant I received for testing. After a couple of days of use, the blue looks cool too, the light plays subtle variations in colour shades.

An aluminium metal chassis adds to the strength while the front and back are all-glass affair backed up by Gorilla 5 glass. The phone is tad heavier at 199 grams and measures 8.7mm thickness. On the positive side, it feels sturdy while using and the weight balance is done well. While it is not extremely slippery, I would always recommend using a phone with a case, just in case to be on the safer side. The box comes with a soft back case.

The top and bottom are flat with a slight dent in the middle. The top houses a noise-cancelling mic and the bottom houses the speaker, type-C port, mic and audio jack. Yes, the 3.5mm port is not forgotten.

The right side has the power button and the SIM tray. It supports dual SIM but there is no memory card slot. So make a prudent choice when you buy the storage variants with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB on offer. The phone supports dual VoLTE. I was also told the X2 Pro will soon get support WiFi calling (VoWiFi) via a new update. The left side has the volume buttons. The phone features a 4×4 MIMO antenna to ensure proper data or Wi-Fi signal irrespective of how you are holding the phone while gaming.

To sum it up, the Realme X2 Pro is not outlandish but has a feel-good look and feel about it to please everyone.

Display of Realme X2 Pro

Here is where Realme has amped up its aggressive presence. With 90Hz refresh rate on the display, they have literally made it a standard for any future flagship phones. The 6.5-inches screen is a Super AMOLED panel with Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution. The display is certified for HDR10+ playback and supports a 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut range.

With a 1000 nits brightness rating, the legibility under direct sunlight is a non-issue. The display setting offers control over screen colour temperature with a slider to cooler to warmer., The setting also has night shield which is the eye comfort mode and low brightness flicker-free eye-care mode. There are two colour modes to choose from, Vivid and Gentle. The Vivid colour mode is based on DCI-P3 colour range while the Gentle mode represents sRGB colours. The screen refresh rate can be scaled down to 60Hz to conserve battery life if you want to.

The X2 Pro has Widevine L1 DRM certification which means you can enjoy the Netflix and Prime videos on high resolutions and are not restricted.

The 90Hz refresh rate offers butter smooth experience and the screen is very vivid and bright. Some may feel it slightly oversaturated but with my understanding of the Indian consumer preference, the larger section would enjoy the popping colours the display offers.

Realme X2 Pro OS – Color OS but Realme UI is coming

So far the Realme devices have been running on Android-based Color OS it shares with Oppo Smartphones but Realme is working on Realme UI to differentiate their phones and is currently on the beta testing on few of their devices. The new UI would be coming to X2 Pro too very sooner. At the time am drafting this review, it runs on Color OS 6.1 with Android 9 base.

You get dark mode, a bunch of customization options including navigation gestures, gesture and motions control for screen off gestures, smart call motion controls and extra add ons like an assistive ball, a smart sidebar for quick accesses.

The in-display fingerprint sensor is very quick and face recognition swift to respond too. Additionally, you also get app unlock via these sensors.

Hardware muscle – punching full weight

When it comes to performance, the Realme X2 Pro is a top gun armed with Snapdragon 855+ chipset that adorns every flagship worth the salt this season. The Snapdragon 855 Plus is a slightly overclocked version of the 855 chipsets, the GPU is a bit tweaked to offer 15% better performance. The phone is available in three choices – 6GB+64GB, 8GB+128GB and going full throttle with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

The best in class internals means you get the best performance you can drive out of a Smartphone at this age. You can throw any game at it and it will handle at easy and also 90Hz refresh rate means you can have even more smoother gameplay on supporting games.

With HDR10+ playback and higher nits level, watching your favourite movies on the screen would be a pleasant experience. The stereo speakers, AMOLED panel all aid in the audio-visual experience.

On a short note, there is nothing to complain about the capability of the X2 Pro.

Realme X2 Pro Camera

 64 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/1.7″, 0.8µm, PDAF

13 MP, f/2.5, 52mm (telephoto), 1/3.4″, 1.0µm, PDAF, 2x optical zoom

8 MP, f/2.2, 16mm (ultrawide), 1/3.2″, 1.4µm, PDAF

2 MP, f/2.4, 1/5.0″, 1.75µm, depth sensor

Vertical quad-camera setup is centred at top of the rear side of X2 Pro. The main camera is a Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 64MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. It uses quad-Bayer arrangement to capture 16MP photos. If you want to go full pixels, there is a dedicated 65MP mode to capture the photos in full glory of detailing but also makes it a heavy file. The primary camera is complemented by a 13MP telephoto lens, an 8MP ultra-white sensor and a 2MP depth sensor.

For regular photography, the phone does justice. The images are vivid and adequately detailed. There is a chroma boost on toggle for those who prefer more pronounced colours in their photos.

The X2 Pro is also equipped with 5x optical zoom and 20x hybrid zoom. It manages to do well in this front compared with its competitors in this segment barring the likes of Reno.

The X2 Pro also comes handy with macro photography and can keep you adequately busy if you love taking macros. There is no dedicated macro setting but going up close on wide-angle mode gets you the job.

The wide-angle is a good addition too though not very sharp enough as in normal mode. The night mode is a bit forgettable affair with noise creeping in. It lacks OIS but EIS helps to an extent for videos. You can take videos up to 4K @ 60fps.

Battery Life – Unbelievably fast!

Another area where the X2 Pro takes the limelight is with its 50W SuperVOOC fast charging technology. The adapter comes bundled out of the box. It can fire up the 4000mAh battery from 0% to 100% in 35 minutes flat. As far as the battery life is concerned it can sail through a day at ease and even when down, it’s just 30 minutes away from a full charge.

Verdict

What works for Realme X2 Pro

Smoother 90Hz Refresh rate display

Ultra-fast 50W SuperVOOC charging technology

Rich Dual Stereo Speaker

Decent Camera

Gaming powerhouse

Value for money

What X2 Pro lacks

No OIS

No expandable storage

Night mode could have been better

Overall, Realme X2 Pro punches above its weight. It’s a flagship phone at an affordable price. The 90Hz display and the crazily fast 50W SuperVOOC charging rewrites the budget flagship expectations and like I said in the beginning it truly democratizes the flagship experience.

Galaxy S2 released back in 2011 stamped the authority of Samsung Galaxy S series and lead Samsung’s ascendancy to the high pedestal of Smartphone world. It was declared smartphone of the year 2012 by World Mobile Congress’s Global mobile awards and also scored high on almost all leading critic ratings.
With a huge user base, it makes sense for Samsung to update the software to the latest Android 4.1.2 Jellybean update giving the users the best support experience as well as taste of the latest OS flavour. It would also enable the users a ‘familiar’ continuous device ecosystem when they plan to upgrade their device.
The rollout is in phases so it might take time to arrive at your device depending on the region, network operator etc but the good news is it would definitely hit your S2.
The update also brings Nature UX Interface that Samsung first unveiled in Galaxy S III along with updated TouchWiz UI.
So what could you expect in Android 4.1.2 for Galaxy S2?

According to Samsung, myMovies would have a collection of 2000 movies, while myMusic service would give access to more than 3 lakhs songs. myEducation aimed at the student community gives access to text books and video books for students of class 1 – 12. More on that in our detailed review later.
Smart Stay detects our eye movement and helps in avoiding the time-out as long as our eyes are focused on the screen, it not only avoids the irritation of screen time-out while reading or browsing but also saves battery.
Direct call is yet another intuitive feature where in an user can automatically dial a call by taking the phone up to the ears from the message window or from the view contact, reducing the manual step required to connect a call.
Smart Alert shows missed events such as missed calls and new messages just by picking up the phone, without having to go into the notification panel.
Popup Play enables the users to watch video in a pop-up window anywhere on the screen while running other tasks. The screen size of the pop up window can be adjusted too.
The S Voice feature is Samsung’s answer to Apple’s SIRI and it helps the user to control the phone using their voice.
The All Share Play enables easy sharing and playing of contents across Samsung digital devices, anywhere anytime.
Also included are face and voice lock and unlock.

Galaxy Grand Price and limited time offer

Galaxy Grand is priced at Rs. 21,500. As a limited time offer, Samsung offers a free original flip case with the box and also bundled is a Rs 8000 worth free music and movie download through ‘My Services’ and 50GB Dropbox space. Additionally, Vodafone users also get 2GB data download free per month for 2 months.
In short, Galaxy Grand offers the best of Galaxy S3 in a bigger screen and only sore note would be the could-be-better screen resolution. Otherwise, the device is smartly priced.]]>

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]amsung has added yet another model to its ever-growing Galaxy range of Android phones. The latest to join the list is Galaxy SII Plus.

Ironically only plus from the original S2 model seems to be Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS update. So out of box, Galaxy S2 Plus brings the awesomeness of Jelly Bean along with now standard features of mid range to premium galaxies features like Direct Call, Smart Stay, Smart Alert, Pop Up Video, S Voice etc.
On hardware side Galaxy S2 Plus is no different from the SII. So we have a 4.3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM. The shooter is made of a 8 MP rear camera and a 2 MP front camera. It also has features like Buddy Share, Group face tag etc that we have seen in S3 and some of the subsequent models.
I would rather call it a minus, since Galaxy S2 Plus comes with a 8 GB internal storage where as the S2 packed in a 16 GB to begin with.
Galaxy SII Plus is available in white and black colors.

Armed with a huge screen retail space of 5″, Samsung’s latest addition to Galaxy range, Galaxy Grand might look like a slightly grown up Galaxy S III but don’t let the size fool you. Galaxy S3 indeed is still the king of all Smartphones and Galaxy Grand is no challenger to the crown.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]f first impression is the best impression, Galaxy Grand, true to its name looks grand,a bit outgrown replica of Galaxy S3. Power on the device and you might refute the statement. For an impressive 5″ display, it stacks a low 800 x 480 resolution.
If you excuse the low resolution, it runs on the latest Android 4.1.2 OS, Jelly Bean and equipped with a 1.2 GHz Dual Core processor to take care of the smartness like multi-tasking, faster web browsing etc.
Galaxy Grand has a 8 MP shooter on the rear and a 2 MP HD camera in the front for video calling. According to Samsung’s official blog, the camera has a zero shutter-lag and comes with a ultra-quick camera start-up. It also promises a better picture quality in low lights and also allows for full HD video recording.
The ultra smart features that we see in Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note like direct call, smart alert, pop up video, S Voice and All Share Play finds its way into the Galaxy Grand.
Galaxy Grand will be available in two variants – a dual SIM version [GT-I9082] and a single SIM version [GT-I9080]. Though the dual SIM variant will be available initially.

The specifications especially having a low resolution on a big phone and the initial focus upon the dual SIM variant seems like the Galaxy Grand is aimed at markets like China, India, Latin America and Africa where exists a huge and expanding smartphone market especially for more affordable devices.

Nokia is not going to get bogged down on the smartphone big clash. At LeWeb 2012 in Paris today, Nokia announced the launch of its entry level Winows Phone 8 handset, Lumia 620, which is the third of the Lumia range under Windows Phone 8.

The budget-friendly Lumia 620 has a 3.8 inch TFT screen ClearBlack display with a 800×480 WVGA resolution and packing a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, 512 MB RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, expandable by microSD (up to 64GB cards supported).
Sounds decent enough? I know your next query would be the camera. Lumia 620 flaunts a rear 5 MP shooter with LED flash and supporting a 720 video recording, while for self-shooting you got a VGA camera in the front.
True to the other Lumia siblings, Lumia 620 would also has range of connectivity options that includes WiFi or WCDMA 3G, with NFC and Bluetooth 3.0.
Nokia Lumia 620 is available in vibrant and attractive lime green, orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, white and black.
Estimated price of Lumia 620 is USD 249 and would be available in stores in January 2013 begining with Asian markets and then to Europe and Middle East and further. Though there is no word on US market yet.
For those who love personalization of their phones and most of us would love to don’t we? Nokia has added up a “Dual-shot color” colored, transparent or translucent polycarbonate interchangeable shells in seven colors, which you can wrap on your Lumia 620 to zing it up!
Lumia 620 looks a promising and has almost everything that a first-time smartphone buyer would look for and at pocket friendly price tag it sure might grab a pie of the smartphone market that Nokia desperately wants to.
Next what? Lumia 520? Quiet possible but for now it is Lumia 620.

Ever since the invite was out, there were rumours in abundance of the smaller version of the immensely popular Samsung's flagship device, Galaxy S3. Today it has been officially unveiled at an event in Germany. Galaxy S3 Mini is here but not exactly a clone of it's larger sibling.
As expectedly true to its name, it looks similar to the Galaxy S3 but it sports a 4 inch screen but runs of the latest Android OS flavour of the season, Jelly Bean.
Though it shares the powerful S3 surname and the looks albeit the smaller size, the spec sheets of the mini device is a scaled down version of S3 and not comparable.

The device has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with a 800 x 480 display packing a 233 pixels per inch and a dual-core 1GHz processor, not the same fire power that the bigger S3 flaunts. Also the camera gets a dressing down with the mini settling with a 5 MP camera against the 8 MP found in the bigger S3. The front camera has to content with a VGA resolution.

The vital stats of the phone reads as 4.8 inches by 2.5 inches by 0.39 inch and weighs 3.9 ounces, an equivalent to 121.55mm by 63mm by 9.85 mm, and 111.5 grams.

The main highlight of the device though is it runs of the latest Jelly Bean OS.
The mini also delivers many of the features that one has seen in the S3: Smart Stay, Buddy Face camera feature, burst shot, S Beam, Pop up play etc as well as features like All Share.
Name and form factor aside, outwardly the Mini is just yet another addition to the Galaxy portfolio but in a shrewd marketing move, Samsung is milking the Galaxy S3’s success and a smaller device at a lesser price carrying the S3 surname might induce many a buyers who might not afford the better, bigger pedigree.]]>
