The often-quoted line when it comes to photography is “It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument”. While it is absolutely true, with changing technology and the advancements in Smartphone cameras, we can also add safely the importance of the algorithms in producing great imaging.

Oppp has always been the harbinger of camera advancements and innovation in mobile imaging. Right from Oppo Find 7 launched back in 2014, which then was the world’s first phone that can take 50MP image. 2019 was a landmark year for Oppo, when they launched Oppo Reno 10X with the critically acclaimed and lauded 10X hybrid zoom with periscope telephoto lens. It was the first-ever smartphones to sport a periscope camera and offered full bandwidth of 16-160mm in a camera phone. Find X2 Pro in 2020 was equipped with Ultra Vision Camera System sporting a 10X Hybrid Zoom, All Pixel Omni-Directional PDAF and 12-bit True Capture.

The credit for the breakthroughs goes to Oppo’s 5 imaging R&D team spread across Yokohama in Japan, Silicon Valley United States, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Shanghai in China. Together they have built an extensive Patent Portfolio in Imaging Technology with 7500+ patents filed and 2,350+ granted across 25+ countries.

In 2021, Oppo is bringing out an all-new addition to the imaging world with their Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System, first introduced in OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G. As the name would suggest, the new algorithm enhancements bring improved video quality and portrait effects in videos.

Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System Explained

The charm of camera phone is that unlike professional camera equipments like DSLR that requires a fair amount of learning of controls and modes, you can simply pull out your Smartphone and take easily a better photo. This is possible with the algorithms that work in background to ensure the end result is stellar. The hardware advancement in mobile imaging has to be complimented by software enhancements and algorithms for enriching output. With the Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait video system, Oppo is bringing on board an augmented portrait video experience for users on the new OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G based on their extensive expertise in portrait scene detection and portrait feature design.

Let’s delve deep to see how it is achieved. The OPPO FDF Portrait Video System is itself comprised of two engines –the Quality Enhancement Engine and the Portrait Perception Engine.

The Quality Enhancement Engine:

The Quality Enhancement Engine is a suite of algorithms that ensure users can capture quality video images in any situation. Whether in low light, bright light, or fast motion environments, the engine optimizes settings to deliver images that stay true to life. Oppo achived this with AI highlight Video and Ultra Steady Video 3.0

AI Highlight Video:

A good bright lit environment can produce decently good videos but things gets grainier (pun intended) with not so ideal lighting conditions and especially low light where most mobile cameras struggle with videos.

Oppo has crafted AI ultra night video combined with live HDR to enhance the video quality in low light conditions. Oppo claims this to be World’s first feature to use AI algorithms to detect light conditions and automatically apply the required algorithm based on different scenarios on videos.

Oppo’s new quality enhancement engine in a world’s first manages to apply Ultra Night Video and Live HDR effect simultaneously. End result is what you have so far seen in ultra night mode only on photos coming to life on videos with live HDR joining the party for more optimized lit videos taken in not so optimal lighting conditions. The key lies in the adaptive dynamic response for enhancement in videos.

The fusion algorithm sets in action to adaptively enhance and boost the brightness, color and clarity of the low light scenarios captured as well as adaptively reducing the noise levels.

With the Adaptive brightness Auto Exposure (AE) Adaptive Gain is utilized to ensure the signal to noise ratio is in its optimal level.

The Adaptive gain controls the exposure time to bump up the brightness of the image while maintaining a smooth video from frame to frame.

The problem is not solved just by enhancing the brightness levels. There still would be over-exposed and under-exposed areas which need to be corrected, enters Adaptive Dynamic range.

Adaptive Dynamic Range applies dynamic range adjustments to each frame in a video with Dynamic Range Conversion and Fimic Tone Mapping technology to restore lost colors, brightness, and darkness to their natural levels. It also uses Multi-frame HDR Fusion to deliver a greater dynamic range across the entire video.

While it is tedious work when it comes to videos which are basically multiple frames in seconds, the Quality enhancement engine achieves this by mapping the brightness and color in each frame accordingly.

With Live HDR setting in, it is possible to apply multi-frame HDR Fusion thereby enabling every area in the video to get the most appropriate exposure level.

Details in bright areas are kept while details in dark areas are made visible creating high dynamic videos that are much closer to what eyes see.

Separating the subject and its surroundings has always been a software challenge, but Oppo tries to apply a localized contrast adjustment algorithm to distinguish the subject and its surroundings and locally adjust the brightness, color and contrast of the face.

Noise grains have been always an issue with low light videos on mobile, Oppo tries to fix it with Inter-frame Fusion for Temporal Noise Reduction analyzing the small changes from frame to frame and restore pixels to their original position.

The adaptive noise reduction realigns multiple frames within 5 milliseconds by intelligently merging pixels based on localized movement and macroscopic movement.

Intra-frame Fusion for Spatial Noise Reduction denoises based on three levels of frequency detail in the image. It removes noise in low frequency areas while preserving the rich textures in high frequency areas. All this happens almost real time taking up only 20ms processing time.

Oppo claims its tests shows night time videos appear 74.4% brighter and 33.7% clearer than those recorded without the AI Highlight feature enabled. All this background algorithm processing also takes as little as 20ms.

Reno 5 Pro also brings ultra steady 3.0 video to the front camera.

The Portrait Perception Engine:

People love portrait photography, Oppo brings portrait video feature with Reno 5 Pro. A collection of algorithms deliver higher accuracy in portrait recognition and processing.

The Portrait Perception engine handles and manages strict criteria for the features within a portrait video. These criteria ensure that the portrait subjects and the background are clearly and naturally defined, while also providing the basis from which the Reno5 Pro 5G’ various portrait video effects can be optimally applied.

While portrait photos are still a challenge for many companies, getting it right for videos is a bigger challenge with continuously changing frames. It needs major works on dynamic scene detection, AI modelling and real-time portrait processing. In real case scenarios, it is more complicated. The Portrait Perception engine has to account for the portrait subject when they appear side-on the camera or if they are partially obscured. In real-time, the algorithm processing has to pull out specific features of each person via mapping and recognize each face. Then the AI highlight video can set in to enhance the brightness, color or contrast adjustment precisely. Moving subjects offer more challenges for processing and add to it complex background, to achieve portrait videography is really pulling a rabbit out of a magic hat but possible with the AI algorithm expertise Oppo has mastered all through the years and it’s understanding of motion tracking, face optimization and instance segmentation.

Scene detection is a bigger challenge. It not only has to account for the changing dynamic scenes but also take into account and analyze the subjects and the objects handled by subjects. In the photo below, the AI scene analyser has to take into consideration the bottle held by the subject while analyzing the portrait.

The algorithm also digs into 10 Millions+ Level Miniaturization Portrait Database for AI modelling. The Portrait perception engine also maps and engages in Face Optimization, Motion Tracking and Instance Segmentation for effective video results. It’s a complicated and tricky algorithm challenge Oppo has achieved for video portrait by its software AI algorithm which is a commendable feat.

With Reno 5 Pro Oppo is set to bring in another milestone to its illustrious camera achievements. It is to be noted in this year’s CVPR Awards –OPPO took first place in the “Perceptual Extreme Super-Resolution challenge” and “Visual localization for handheld devices challenge”, as well as a third-place for “Activity detection in extended videos” challenge. What Oppo brings into videography would be defining moment for Mobile imaging and opening up new possibilities and enriching user experience.

It took a while for Oppo to bring out their Oppo F11 successor which was launched last year and they begin 2020 with the F15 launch. There is no word yet on if Oppo F15 Pro will make a way out but with the launch of F15, Oppo has at least reiterated their focus on their F series. The Oppo F15 can be termed as a modest upgrade over its predecessor in terms of looks, camera and addition of in-display fingerprint sensor. In India, the Oppo F15 is priced at Rs 19,990 for the 8GB variant, the only variant right now available. In this Oppo F15 review, let’s find what Oppo has manged to squeeze in this upgrade.

What is in the Oppo F15 box:

The F15 phone

User manuals

Sim ejector pin

Soft back case

VOOC 3.0 power adapter

USB Type C cable

Earphone

Oppo F15 Design – the highlight

When I unboxed the phone – I immediately liked the looks. If looks can sell, the Oppo F15 will sell tons. It comes in two colour variants – ‘Unicorn White’ colour and a ‘Lightning’ Black. Without a second thought the white variant if my choice and that is what I have for the review. Second thing, that I liked about the F15 is its form factor. The recent waves of Smartphones are heavier and thicker but measuring 7.9mm in thickness and weighing 172g, the Oppo F15 is lighter on hands. Thanks to its 20:9 aspect ratio, the tall boy design has a narrow waistline, making it again easy to hold.

While the industry trend is towards the glass, the Oppo F15 has a plastic back but flaunts a glass finish. The gradient finish of the unicorn white is a delight. The rear has the vertically arranged quad-camera flanked by an LED flash and oppo branding below. The sides are gently sloped towards the edges.

The bottom has the 3.5mm audio port, mic, USB Type-C port and the speaker.

The top like the bottom has a dimpled curve in the middle and houses a noise-cancelling mic.

The right side has the power button, while the left side has the volume buttons and the SIM tray. It houses a triple slot that can accommodate 2 SIMs and a dedicated memory card. The phone supports dual VoLTE with dual standby.

Oppo F15 Display

6.4 inches AMOLED display

1080 x 2400 pixels

85.5% screen-to-body ratio

Corning Gorilla Glass 5

430 nits brightness

20:9 aspect ratio

The F15 has a beautiful AMOLED display, the colours are vivid and sharp. Even reading under direct sunlight is not a problem. The display settings have screen colour temperature modes to shift between cooler, default and warmer. Eye care mode is also available in the settings. You may have to wait till Color OS 7 releases probably to get the dark mode which is not available now. There is also a anti-flicker toggle. There is no always-on display option.

Oppo F15 – Color OS

Oppo has already announced the Color OS 7 and is being beta tested in some of the phone models. Out of the box though, the Oppo F15 comes with Color OS 6.2 based on Android 9.

Talking about the features, there is a one-hand mode toggle in the quick access settings, there are also kids space, driving mode, focus mode, and grayscale mode. Ya, the screen turns to grayscale when you toggle it on. The OS also provides gesture navigation and also to change the back and menu button positioning. There are quick access features like an assistive ball and smart sidebar to access certain apps or settings on the go quickly. For those who love gesture actions, there is screen-off gestures, double-tap to wake, music control gestures etc. Three-finger screenshots, raise to turn on the screen, smart call options complete the smart gesture and motion actions. Digital wellbeing and parental controls bring some order to the time spent on the phone.

There are many pre-installed apps and bloatware but fortunately, most of the third-party apps can be uninstalled if you like.

Oppo F15 Performance, Gaming

Oppo has for whatever reason decided to stick with the Mediatek Helio P70 that powered the last year’s F11. This is kind of baffling for me. While it is not a bad SoC and in fact, Mediatek came back to reckoning with this capable chipset along with its sibling P60, much water has flown down the bridge since then in the processor side. That the phone comes with only an 8GB variant with 128GB storage is a bit of solace. It uses UFS 2.1 standard storage.

The Oppo F15 is only available in one configuration, which is 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The latter uses the UFS 2.1 standard, which is good. It also stacks the bells and whistles standard sensors including gyroscope. For a phone targetted at the offline market, the lack of FM might be a dampener for some. There is OTG support, in case you want to transfer files via pen drives.

The in-display fingerprint sensor is very fast and accurate, the face recognition is quicker too when there is enough light. App lock and a private safe ensure your apps stay away from prying eyes.

Talking about the performance, as a normal daily driver there should be no reason to complain but considering the chipset, the industry is constantly upgrading with new SoC making way with powerful internals, the Helio P70 is now underwhelming for this price segment. You can play games, can play PUBG in mid-graphic settings but Oppo could have added more fire to the belly to the F15.

Oppo F15 Battery life

Equipped with a 4000 mAh battery and a VOOC 3.0 fast charging support, the Oppo F15 offers a good battery life. I could sail through a full day on good mixed-use. Charging is pretty fast too, with 30 mins pumping up 47 percent and hits around 88% in an hour. It takes about 1 hour 20 minutes for 0-100%.

Oppo F15 Camera

48 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/2.0″, 0.8µm, PDAF

8 MP, f/2.3, 13mm (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm

2 MP B/W, f/2.4, 1/5.0″, 1.75µm

2 MP, f/2.4, 1/5.0″, 1.75µm, depth sensor

Front camera: 16 MP, f/2.0, 26mm (wide), 1/3.1″, 1.0µm

One of the bigger upgrades over the F11 is on the camera front. A quad-camera setup at the rear has a 48MP as the primary sensor, the front camera touts a 16MP. The primary camera shoots 12-megapixel pictures by default with pixel binding but strangely there is no option to choose the 48-megapixel resolution. The camera UI is similar to the other Oppo phones. There is a night mode, timelapse, slo-mo and pro mode.

On good lighting conditions, the pictures come very well. The soft bokeh effect comes out good. The colours are well-produced. The main camera brings out enough detailing in the images.

You can also toggle up the wide-angle camera and then go up close for macro photography.

Coming to the portrait mode, you can adjust the level of blur before taking a snap. The portrait mode worked decently well, the edge detection is pretty good too. In the comparison below, you would notice the non-portrait picture more colourful and brighter. The portrait mode tends to be slightly overexposed.

Smartphones these days features bigger displays, mightier processors and the designers have to take a middle path to include a decent battery and still strive to retain a slim profile. Unfortunately, battery life still struggles to cope up with the needs of heavy-usage smartphone users and while power banks are seen as convenient backup, reducing re-charge times makes better sense.
So we see various terms used commonly ‘fast’ , ‘quick’ , ‘rapid’ and ‘turbo’ and OEM’s and chipset makers adopting different propreitory technology. We have Qualcomm’s quick charge (QC), MediaTek’s PumpExpress, Samsung’s rebranded QC which goes by the name Adaptive fast technolghy, Motorola’s Turbo Power system and amidst all these, Oppo has its own VOOC Fash charging technology. While they recently also announced their next generation Super VOOC technology, it’s yet to go commercial.
Oppo F1 Plus, the Smartphone the company calls it as ‘the Selfie expert’ makes use of VOOC Fast charging feature. The F1 Plus has a 2850 mAh battery and let’s see how fast it can recharge itself using VOOC.
Usually the fast charge technology uses a simple route. More watts equals more power and increased power at disposal means the Smartphones can charge quick. While it sounds seemingly easy, effectively implementing calls for adept research. Let’s not delve into the battery technology subject (it can get really boring and I might do a separate post!) You are propably here because you are interested in Oppo F1 Plus and want to see how fast it can charge and how effective VOOC technology is.
One foremost thing, for the VOOC to be in action, you need a special charger or the one OPPO packs along with the box. Remember, I mentioned earlier we need more watts? You need a charger that supports or pass through a higher watts for your Oppo F1 Plus. If you see the fine print of the charger Oppo packs in, it would read 5V – 4A , watts is arrived by multiplying the current (measured in amps) by the voltage (measured in volts) so, the Oppo’s charger transfers maximum 20 Watts, and the VOOC technology supports the higher consumption.
During the test, I charged the Oppo from complete shut down to full charge, I noted down manually the various charge time log. I ran the test twice and also noted if the phone heats up during the quick charge process.
I collated the log into a graph and this is how it stands.
It took 66 minutes to charge entirely the 2850mAh battery of the Oppo F1 Plus. While it is definitely faster, there are more interesting insights the log offers. A mere 2 minutes of charge is what needed to get a 5% refill during emergency and a 5 minute charge time to fuel up 10% of the F1 Plus battery. Further up, a 11 minutes can tank up to 25% and 23 minutes is what takes to reach the halfway mark. A neat 34 minutes can work its way up to 75%.
Usually the final stage i.e, beyond 80% takes time to reach the full charge mark, the power flow is reduced and all phones go slow during this charging stage. It takes a good 32 minutes for Oppo F1 Plus to fully charge from here. But when you are in a hurry, you can go really fast up to 75% and that is where the VOOC technology gets its credit for.
Now let’s see how much heat is dissipated. While the phone was charging, I collated the heat log and to my surprise the F1 Plus didn’t show any signs of heating up. It merely shot up by a degree which is remarkable. Oppo has fitted the current control circuit to the charger and this wards off the heat from the Smartphones internals, which is also good for the phone’s components.
So the Oppo F1 Plus impresses with the VOOC fast charging technology, it is replenishes the battery juice quickly and effectively.]]>
