Within a month of its global debut, Xiaomi has launched their latest flagship Mi 5 in India, thus silencing some of the critics who used to blame the successful Chinese company of dumping old stocks in India. In a refreshing start to the year after launching Redmi Note 3 in India earlier this month, the Mi 5 is here.
Mi India is bringing in the 3GB variant of the Mi 5 to India with 32GB of on board storage (with an option for expandable memory slot) , priced at Rs 24,999 the Mi 5 is the first Smartphone in India to be equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. The phone will be available on Mi.com starting from 11am on 6 April as part of Mi Fan Festival to celebrate Xiaomi’s sixth anniversary. Later it will be made available in other e-commerce platforms.

Talking about the new device, Hugo Barra, Vice President, Xiaomi, “We are so excited to bring to India the most beautiful device we have unveiled so far, and only within a month of its global launch. Mi 5 is the perfect embodiment of high performance and a beautiful, lightweight design. It has been in the making for 19 months, and has several tech breakthroughs built into it, like the 4-axis OIS camera.”
One of the key highlight of the Mi 5 is the design language. It’s made of 3D glass body, strengthened by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on both the sides. The sweeping curved edges gives an elegant look and gives a smooth transition from glass to metal with an almost bezel-less screen. The Mi 5 is very light and weighs only 129 grans and is 7.25mm in thickness in spite of the 3000mAh battery pack inside.
In Mi 5, Xiaomi has accommodated the fingerprint scanner at the front at the capacitive home button. It features a 5.15-inch display with a 1080p resolution. The display has a 600-nit brightness due to the 16 LED lights behind its LCD display. The device is also the first from Xiaomi to run on Android Marshmallow with MIUI 7 above it. The Snapdragon 820 delivers an Antutu score of over 113,000, and promises great performance including gaming capabilities aided by Adreno 530 GPU. Mi 5 is also the first Xiaomi smartphone to ship with UFS 2.0 high-speed flash memory and also features USB type-C.
On the camera side, it is equipped with a 16MP rear camera with Sony IMX298 sensor, and features Deep Trench Isolioation (DTI) , a pixel-to-pixel isolation technology for color separation. Another remarkable addition is the 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), I tested it at the launch event and it works great especially for videos. Usual OIS technology on other phones uses 2-axis. For selfies, there is a 2-micron pixel 4MP front camera.
Connectivity side, Mi 5 supports all India LTE bands and also supports VoLTE, NFC.It also features Qualcomm Quick charge 3.0
We have the device and look forward to the complete review in few days.

At the Redmi Note 3 earlier this month, Hugo Barra mentioned they will bring Xiaomi Mi5 the company's latest flagship device to Indian market in April and it was no casual remark. The launch event is here and on 31st of March.
Yes, it's the same device that was showcased at the recently concluded MWC last month and was launched in China and not wasting much time, they are bringing the device to India promptly.

I had spend some time with the Mi5 during the Redmi Note 3 launch and it’s a light-weight Smartphone that has all the credentials to be a flagship product and is the first device powered by Snapdragon 820 processor which promises greater performance. It would be interesting to see how they would price the Mi5 in India and the variants they would bring in. We will keep you updated on the launch day.

Xiaomi has officially announced the Mi 5, its latest flagship device, at events in Beijing and Barcelona today. True to its reputation, it has again delivered a thoroughbred flagship device at a low price.
The Mi5 design is carried forward from Mi Note Pro and has a metal frame and is also available on two body types, the regular variant has a 3D glass back panel and the Mi5 Pro model features a ceramic body body, which the company says is highly durable and water resistant.
The 5.15-inch fullHD display has 600nits luminosity thanks to 16 LEDs behind the display screen. The Mi5 is the Xiaomi's first device to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, though it has the MIUI 7 over it. It is also currently the only device to be available in the market powered by Snapdragon 820 processor with Adreno 530 GPU. When I meant currently, the device goes on sale on March 1st in China, followed by India and other markets. Doing away with eMMC, Xiaomi has used UFS 2.0 standard, which it claims to be 75 percent faster than eMMC 5.1.
The Mi5 will be available in three variants - SD 820 2.15 GHz + 4GB + 128GB, SD 820 2.15 GHz + 3GB + 64GB and SD 820 1.8GHz + 3GB + 32GB . The three variants are priced at Yuan 2699, 2299 and 1999 (Rs 28,312, Rs 24,097 and Rs 20,969) respectively. The top of the line variant with the 4GB of RAM supposedly delivers a big score of 142,083 on AnTuTu benchmark.

The Mi5 would be available in three colors – Black, white and a golden shade. It measures 7.25 mm and weights just 129 grams. A 3000mAh battery is fitted into this slim profile. The device supports Quick Charge 3.0 and Xiaomi says the device can top 80% – 90 % in 60 minutes. The home button on the front also doubles as a finger print scanner.
On the camera front, The Mi 5 is equipped with a Sony IMX298 sensor, 16-megapixel rear camera with PDAF, 6P lens, sapphire glass protection lens and 4-axis OIS. Xiaomi claims the 4-axis OIS is an industry first and offers way better image stabilization. The 4-axis OIS works on horizontal and vertical image stabilization and comes very handy in the close ups and long shots. The selfie camera is similar to the one on the Mi Note with a 4-megapixel sensor with 2-micron pixels.
Other technical details shared by Xiaomi on Mi5 includes Qualcomm’s Spectra image processor for shooting 4K videos, color enhancement and dark light enhancement. The DTI pixel to pixel isolation technology makes sure there is no light bleeding into the other pixels which helps deliver better colors and better picture quality smartphone.
Mi5 also supports VoLTE which many users have been asking for of late considering the 4G penetration. It also supports NFC.
