Barely five months after launching Galaxy Gear, the company's first wearable device, Samsung today announced its next-generation smartwatches, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo and thus kickstarting the World Mobile Congress. Conspicuous by absence is the Galaxy branding and it is for a good reason as as these device run on Samsung’s Tizen platform.
[gallery columns="5" ids="6498,6499,6500,6503,6504"]
Talks of Samsung releasing Tizen Smartphones are doing rounds for quiet long time now but the Korean giant chose to test waters with Gear for its new OS. Though running on Tizen, the Gear smartwatches would be compatible with many Galaxy Smartphones.
Samsung says switching to Tizen would help the Gear smartwatch a better battery life, an area which was of much concern in the first edition of Gear. According to the company, the new Gear would have a battery life of 2-3 days, twice the life of Galaxy Gear.
Though the overall design looks pretty much same, there are notable changes made to the Gear in this second outing. Most notable is the camera which is now built into the front of the watch alongside the IR blaster, a shift from the original placement on the wristband. The mic is also moved to the main device. We are not sure if the moving the camera and mic to the main device would not allow swapping of straps with third-party straps like what Pebble allows. The home button is also now seen below the device rather than occupying the side.
The new Gear smartwatches retain the same screen with a 1.63-inch touchscreen and the internals gets a mild changes with a a 1GHz dual-core processor, a light push ahead of the earlier 800MHz, 4GB internal storage, 512MB of RAM, infrared, S Voice, a heart rate sensor, IP67 certification for resistance to water and dust, a 2MP AF camera with 720p video capture (available on Gear 2) and a 300mAh battery.
There are also an array of new apps including from BMW, CNN, Garmin, Line, and Path. The smartwatches also has been enhanced with various exercise modes and heart rate monitor for health freaks. Yet another significant improvement is an inclusion of a standalone music player that can pair with headphone via Bluetooth.
With the design and hardware remaining same, the only difference between the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo is that Gear 2 Neo does not have a camera. Due to the fact, it is also a tad lighter at 55gms compared to 68grams of Gear 2.
There is no word on the pricing but the new Gears are expected to hit the markets in April.]]>

Alongside Galaxy Note 3, Samsung also launched its much-awaited wearable device the Galaxy Gear in India at an event in Delhi. Samsung’s first smartwatch is priced at Rs 22,990 and like the Galaxy Note 3 will be available from September 25 onwards.
The Galaxy Gear is touted as a companion to the Galaxy devices though initially it is compatible only with Galaxy Note 3 and the newly announced Note 10.1 tablet. The company says they will release software updates in October to make the Gear work with Galaxy S4, Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II.

A quick run through the specs. The Galaxy Gear features a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED (320×320 pixels) display and is powered by a 800MHz processor and 512MB of RAM. It also include a 1.9-megapixel camera on its strap, 4GB of storage and a 315mAh battery, which according to Samsung can last for more than a day.
As a companion to the Galaxy device, Galaxy Gear will notify you about incoming calls, texts, emails and other alerts. There is also two built-in mics and a speaker to allow answering or making calls. You can also control the music you play on the Galaxy device right from the Gear.
Samsung has lined up 70 third-party apps to work with Gear. It supports and features fitness apps like RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal and other apps like Evernote, Line, Ebay and TripIt. Expect more third-party apps to join the fray as the device gain traction. Though exact details of how the apps interact with Gear is yet to be revealed by the app partners.
Galaxy Gear will be available in six color variants including jet black, mocha gray, wild orange, oatmeal beige, rose gold, and lime green.

Samsung on Wednesday unveiled the Galaxy Gear smartwatch at it’s ‘Unpacked event’ in Berlin, a Bluetooth companion watch for the Galaxy Note 3 and 10.1 and might later include selected other galaxy devices.

Finally Samsung’s first outing with wearable device is here in the shape of Galaxy Gear. The company prefers to call it a wearable device that also functions as a wrist watch. A smart play of words and we will detail it below.
The future is steering towards wearable devices and while on one side Google is prepping up it’s Google Glass, the other war front that would see heavy action is wearable devices for your wrist. We have already Pebble and Sony Smart watch but everyone expects the current big daddy’s of the tech world, Apple and Samsung to leverage their might here. While Apple’s iWatch is yet a mystery, Samsung unveiled it’s first generation Samsung Galaxy Gear and takes advantage of the first-mover over it’s rival.

Samsung Galaxy Gear specs

[caption id="attachment_5094" align="aligncenter" width="691"] pic courtesy: Samsung Tomorrow Global[/caption]
The Galaxy Gear features a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with 320 x 320 resolution that adds up to a sharp 277 pixels per inch. It also includes a 1.9-megapixel strap-mounted camera with a BSI sensor and an auto-focus lens which shoots low-resolution snapshots and 10-second 720p video clips as part of the memographer feature to capture quickly various moments in life on the move. The device is powered by a 800 mHz processor, 512MB RAM and includes 4GB of internal storage. It connects to your Galaxy phone or tablet via Bluetooth 4.0and packs a non-removable 315 mAh battery which the company claims will last for a day.

Samsung Galaxy Gear features

To begin with Samsung Galaxy Gear is not a stand alone device but currently is only compatible with Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition while works on the way to release an update as early as October to get it work with selected other devices like Galaxy S4, S3 and Note 2. It’s quiet clear that the Korean giant wants to use the Galaxy Gear as an accessory for it’s Galaxy devices. This might disappoint scores of other Android users hoping to use it with their non-Samsung Android smartphones or stand alone device.
So what Galaxy gear can do?

Instant notifications

For starters, no more fumbling and pulling out your smartphone to check for incoming calls, messages, emails. The Gear notifies you of all the incoming alerts and also gives a preview notifications. To top it, when you check the preview messages on the watch and for further action you pick the smartphone, the Smart Relay feature keeps the emails or messages automatically open in the phone screen.

Memographer

The 1.9 megapixel camera mounted on the strap acts an event log for your life memories allowing for snapping low-resolution pictures as well as 10-second videos on the go and quickly. The 4 GB included storage should be good enough for your random life collage. You can also share the moments with social networks.

Voice memo

How about recording your thoughts or conversations and save those voice snippets into texts on your Galaxy devices? Voice memo for your rescue. Talk to your wrist now and make a collage of your thoughts.

Music control

With the Galaxy Gear strapped on, you can now control the music played on your smartphone directly from the Gear’s screen. Though it does not store music, you can browse, play and pause songs playing on your connected Galaxy device.

In-built Pedometer and sensors

It’s a feature that would appeal to many by tracking physical activity. It tracks data like calories burned, steps taken and distance covered taking a cue from the S-Health app that Samsung introduced with Galaxy S4. Additionally it also has built-in accelerometer and gyroscope.

App support

As a jump start, Samsung has lined up 70 third party apps to work with Gear. It supports and features fitness apps like RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal and other apps like Evernote, Line, Ebay and TripIt. Expect more third party apps to join the fray as the device gain traction. Though exact details of how the apps interact with Gear is yet to be revealed by the app partners.

Availability and pricing of Galaxy Gear

Beginning September 25, Galaxy Gear will be available in more than 140 countries. In US it should be available for $299.
