The company has not said when the feature rolls out or what the phone will cost with it. The announcement positions the 2165C as a payment device for buyers who either cannot or do not want to carry a smartphone.

The 2165C itself is a basic feature phone: a 2-inch display, a 1,200mAh battery with what itel calls AI Battery and Super Battery modes, up to 11.67 hours of talk time and up to 25 days of standby. It charges over USB Type-C and supports Bluetooth, wireless FM radio with recording, and automatic call recording.

The phone supports 10 Indian languages and expandable storage up to 32GB, with room for 2,000 contacts and 500 messages.

itel sells through more than 1.3 lakh retail outlets and 1,000 service centres across India, which matters for a product aimed at first-time digital payment users outside big cities.
