Samsung Galaxy Grand – A 5" Smartphone but not so grand
Lakshmi Rajan
Armed with a huge screen retail space of 5″, Samsung’s latest addition to Galaxy range, Galaxy Grand might look like a slightly grown up Galaxy S III but don’t let the size fool you. Galaxy S3 indeed is still the king of all Smartphones and Galaxy Grand is no challenger to the crown.
[dropcap]I[/dropcap]f first impression is the best impression, Galaxy Grand, true to its name looks grand,a bit outgrown replica of Galaxy S3. Power on the device and you might refute the statement. For an impressive 5″ display, it stacks a low 800 x 480 resolution.
If you excuse the low resolution, it runs on the latest Android 4.1.2 OS, Jelly Bean and equipped with a 1.2 GHz Dual Core processor to take care of the smartness like multi-tasking, faster web browsing etc.
Galaxy Grand has a 8 MP shooter on the rear and a 2 MP HD camera in the front for video calling. According to Samsung’s official blog, the camera has a zero shutter-lag and comes with a ultra-quick camera start-up. It also promises a better picture quality in low lights and also allows for full HD video recording.
The ultra smart features that we see in Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note like direct call, smart alert, pop up video, S Voice and All Share Play finds its way into the Galaxy Grand.
Galaxy Grand will be available in two variants – a dual SIM version [GT-I9082] and a single SIM version [GT-I9080]. Though the dual SIM variant will be available initially.
The specifications especially having a low resolution on a big phone and the initial focus upon the dual SIM variant seems like the Galaxy Grand is aimed at markets like China, India, Latin America and Africa where exists a huge and expanding smartphone market especially for more affordable devices.
