While the tablets market is nosediving, the 2-in-1 segment is booming. They are convenient and are versatile. While the Surface Pro is the ultimate dream machine at one end of the spectrum, the other end has many entry-level machines running on piddly Intel Atom processors but Smartron, a new desi brand takes the middle path. It’s affordable, functional and can perform decently well running on Intel Core M and it got the good looks too.
In case you were living in dark lately, Smartron is an Indian company with big ambitions in IoT and they launched the tBook, a 2-in-1 detachable a few weeks back at Rs 39,999 and tPhone, their first Android Smartphone will make the debut next month. That Sachin Tendulkar has been impressed with the company and is backing it as an investor and brand ambassador gives the brand the extra visibility.
We got the retail box of the Smartron tBook and here is the unboxing and first impression of the convertible which runs on Windows 10 and retails at Gadgets360 and I was told will also hit the offline market very soon.
The packaging is interesting. Once unsealed, it cannot be reused. So when you buy this from a store or online, you can be rest assured that its a fresh piece from the manufacturer and is not opened up for demo purposes or for any other reason earlier.

A neat sturdy, white box sits inside with Smartron branding. The box gives a positive vibe, detailing matters at every stage and so far, so smart.

Open the lid and sits the tBook.

The box content also includes the keyboard

And the power brick with type-C adapter.

The t-Book has a 12.2-inch WQXGA display with IPS technology and supports multi-touch, the display has an oleophopic coating that avoids fingerprint smudges. The 2560-by-1600 resolution (2K) is a surprise addition at this price segment.
It looks very similar to Surface Pro but has a noticeable weight to it but it also gives the user a sturdy, solid build quality. It is made of Magnesium and Aluminum chassis.

The dual tone shade of burnt orange and grey gives it a very characteristic look. We don’t come across color dressing in this category routinely but there is also an all grey variant, in case you like to go subtle. I personally is fond of this oxidized orange shade and Smartron has done a fab job at the finishing and build quality.
A flip out stand is tucked in to the surface and is easy to release and is secures well. A cut out on the right bottom helps to easily flip the stand out and a 3.5 mm audio jack sits next to it.
The power and volume bottons are at the top. The right side has all the ports.
• 2xFull-size USB 3.0
• Micro HDMI port
• Micro SD card slot, expandable upto 128GB
• Type C(for charging) along with USB 3.0
The bottom has the magnetic pogo pin for keyboard. The detachable keyboard docks easily to the tablet to get into the laptop mode.
The keyboard is full sized and is easy to type. Though the track pad was over sensitive and a slightest touch annoyingly makes the browser smaller in the middle of the work. When the feedback was given to the Smartron team, they assured an update will fix the issue. Otherwise the keyboard works well plus it also serves as a flip cover for the display.
The t-Book has dual stereo speakers at the front and dual microphone nor noise cancellation. It is also equipped with a 5MP rear camera with autofocus and a front facing 2MP camera that can take HD video.

Powering the t-Book is 64-bit, Intel Core M processor offering a ‘good enough’ level of performance and a better power management operatimg at a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of just 4.5 watts. A 4Gb of 1600MHz LPDDR3 RAM is included and the tB0ok comes with a SSD storage of 128GB capacity. The microSD card can support another 128GB.
Smartron t-Book has a 10000mAh battery and the company claims it offers 10 hours of web browsing and 28 days of standby time. I will validate the battery life in my complete review after testing the product for a week.
My initial impression on the tBook remains optimistic. Good looks, attractive dual-color, solid build quality , neat display with brilliant touch response and my few hours spend on it so far (in fact am drafting this article on the tBook) has given it a positive start.

In spite of space constraints, we managed to find place for all our books – at the corners, filling the under-the-bed storage and even our wardrobes! It attracts typical, standard question from my friends and visitors that why being a tech writer I have not embraced Kindle yet? I was expected to be the first one to use it and suggest it to others but rather looks like I am a late adopter of Kindle, which has kind of become synonymous with e-reader. I have for quiet long time now resisted the idea of Kindle for my reading. Like many good, old, passionate readers I love that fresh smell emanating from the pages of a new book as you flip through, the texture of the paper which obviously you cannot in a e-reader. A tree is being cut for the joy of reading a book, if you are Eco-conscious and also, the space constraints in a city living means e-reader are increasingly popular. An entire shelf of books can be stored digitally and can be accessed anytime, anywhere. So finally I took a plunge and tried the Kindle Paperwhite, did it win over me? Read ahead.

Frankly, the first time I took hold of the 2015 Kindle Paperwhite , it felt awkward. The dimension was smaller than the regular book. For a moment, I pondered ‘do I really need to read on this screen‘ but by now the tech writer in me had taken over and I am not looking back now. I am going to read at least one book on this and experience it. After toying endlessly with colorful displays in mobiles and tablets, the all-white or rather paper white display looked ‘strange’. But it makes perfect sense. The paper white display is made for your eyes. It won’t strain your eyes after hours of reading. Remember, the blue filter toggle tucked in most Smartphone display settings that promises to be good for reading, well, the PaperWhite display makes them feel a poor attempt. The PaperWhite display is genuinely made for reading.
The 6″ E-ink display has a 300 pixels per inch which makes for super-crisp, sharp text and visuals. After all a blurred ink can kill the joy on prints and screens. This is supposed to be a marked improvement from the earlier generations.
I made my first e-book purchase. For long I wanted to read The Martian by Andy Weir, even though I have watched the movie adaptation, so it was my first purchase and it was instantly delivered into my Kindle account. One also saves bucks when buying kindle editions over the conventional books. Every penny saved, more books to buy.

Sometimes I crib over typography of some books. Kindle gives the freedom to choose your convenient font size, fonts (Bookerly font is my choice, it’s neat) , the spacing and also show the reading progress. These tools make Kindle a good mode to read. I slowly start developing a likeness for it, dismissing my initial skepticism.
Parents are paranoid about children getting addicted to electronic devices especially Smartphones and tablets. I have a 6 year old son, who has acquired the reading habits of his parents and this is one device I would be happy if he spends time with. What makes this special over the paper books? It betters his reading skills. The built-in dictionary feature accessed by just tapping the words makes them learn new words and also word wise, a feature that shows short and simple definitions automatically above difficult words, so you can keep reading with fewer interruptions. One can also refer from wikipedia and translation right on the page. The vocabulary builder gathers all the terms you searched in dictionary , one can use these lists to quiz yourself with flashcards and instantly see words in context, children who enjoy reading would love it.

I have this habit of taking notes, annotate but WhisperSync, a feature in Kindle simplifies it. It saves and synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks, and annotations across all of your devices and Kindle apps, so you can always pick up where you left off.
Another interesting feature is the X-Ray. It scans through the books and pieces together notable clips, characters, terms and images for reference. Say you want to go through all the mentions of a particular character in the entire book, it’s easy meal.
I am sort of person who wears fitness bands just to see how many steps I walked, though am no fitness freak. I like to read information on me – the way I operate. So I got a fancy for this feature which calculates the reading speed based. Am a slow reader but I still like to see my personalized reading speed, just for the fun of it.
So finally did Kindle manage to change my perception? Will I go paperless? I think yes. I was skeptical but after one good read of a book, I think its an acquired taste. Yes, I miss the smell of papers and the feel of it but Kindle is convenient, I can carry my library on the go, the bundled features are useful and convenient. I would still be reading paper books, it is not easy to change the joy I have got accustomed to since childhood. But I am open to reading on Kindle now, it doesn’t feel alien and I might be buying more and more e-books now for the sheer convenience it offers. When I gave my dad his first phone, I remember him not so comfortable but my kid is naturally at ease with Smartphones and tablets and would be with with e-books also, think Kindle is the way forward. Yes, while I was reading on Kindle, my wife was shaking her head, she still likes the old world charm of holding a book like how I used to be earlier. May be, I will get her read one book and that might change her perception.]]>

What Microsoft showed to the world in its Windows 10 devices event held at NewYork would silence all its critics and restore the faith on them. It also turns the software giant into an all-important hardware company too.
It was one of the best presentation I have ever seen, full of dramatic flurry and Microsoft’s VP Panos Panay gets full credit for it. There was the expected mentions of the new quick heights the Windows 10 OS has occupied within two months of its launch. 110 million+ devices now run it.
While am still intrigued with the HaloLens (may be because I never got a chance yet to experience it), Microsoft announced that it will make HoloLens development kits available in the first quarter of 2016.
From here on wards, everything was super-charged for me. The flurry of show-offs.
Take this list.

Microsoft Band 2.o

Lumia 950 and 950XL , the flagship devices

Lumia 550, a budget offering running on Windows 10

Display dock

Surface Pro 4

And then the unexpected biggest surprise,

Surface Book

Quiet an impressive laundry list, agree?

Microsoft Band 2.0

Aesthetically looking better than the original band and packing more sensors now, the Microsoft Band is what the company calls as the ultimate fitness device. The design language is smooth all through and it flaunts a curved OLED screen with a Gorilla glass. In the latest avatar, the band looks pretty with aluminum metal accents.
We have all the fitness features that was thrown in the first generation band , we are talking about stuffs like GPS, a heart rate monitor, sleep and calorie tracking, guided workout notifications etc. Then there is the new sensor included, barometer to track elevation. Plus, there is also new additions like golf swing tracking, the ability to dig into body’s VO2 max, which I came to know from the presentation is the maximum amount of oxygen you can body can use while you work it out. There is also deeper Cortana integration. Not just this, there is also array of third-party developers right from Starbucks to Twitter and Uber (yes, your next cab is right on your wrist now!).
Microsoft Band will be available from October 30th and is listed at $249.

Lumia 950 and 950XL

After a long gap and dozens of affordable devices in betweem, we have a real flagship Windows Phone and not one but two. The Lumia 950 and 950XL. The former gets a 5.2-inch display while the the XL flaunts a 5.7-inch screen. Both the phones use the USB type-C port.
Both the phones will be available from Novermber onwards and the 950 starts at $549 and the XL at $650.

Both the phones has a infrared sensor for “Windows Hello”, which unlocks a user’s phone by face recognition. Going by the demo, it worked neat. Microsoft also talked of a liquid cooling system, 5th generation OIS. And then there is also a dedicated camera button.

Microsoft showcased a little block that could turn the Windows phone to give a PC experience on a bigger screen. The small box has ports for HDMI, DisplayPort, and three full USB ports. It connects to the monitor by a Type-C USB cable. What was interesting to see during the presentation is how the Windows 10 scales to the bigger screen from the Smartphone and the universal apps of Windows 10 needs a special mention for making the experience seamless.

Slowly and steadily, Microsoft is getting everything right with their Surface tablets. With Surface 3 giving them a shot of confidence, the new Surface Pro 4 is a perfect followup. It’s thinner, lighter, and faster and the screen even slightly larger with the thinning of the bezel.
The convertible now has a 12.3-inch display with what Microsoft calls a ‘PixelSense’ technology. The Surface Pro 4 also gets a Microsoft developed G4 chipset and the company claims it is 50% faster than the MacBook Air and 30% faster than the Surface Pro 3.
Specs include ‘up to’ 16GB of RAM and 1TB of solid-state storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a larger trackpad on the keyboard accessory.
Microsoft also has fine tune the Surface Pen and it also gets an eraser and with some 1000 odds pressure points for accurate scribbling. The Surface Pro 4 is available October 26th, starting at $899.

Definitely the biggest ‘one more thing’ moment that surprised everyone. The folks at Redmond event managed to keep it a big surprise with no leaks or rumours what-so-ever before the event. Microsoft’s direct answer to Apple’s MacBook and also the first laptop from them.
One workd, the Sufrace Book is amazing with whatever details the company shared. Something, I would really want and a befitting answer to Macbook. It’s beautiful. It’s powerful.

It has a 13.5-inch display that supports both stylus and touch input. It has six million pixels, which adds to 267 PPI. It runs a Nvidia GeForce graphics, the latest Intel Core processor with Core i5 and i7 models. It has an quirky hinge that snakes on the behind that Microsoft calls the dynamic fulcrum hinge and the screen can be flipped around. Pressing a button on a keyboard, the display can miraculously detached from the strong hinge and be worked as a standalone surface tablet. Am sold.
The Surface Book is available on October 26th and starts at $1,499.

When the first Galaxy Note was launched people thought it was too big and it had only 5.29-inch display! The mobile screens has grown more bigger since then and going by the sales, people got comfortable with it. But how big can it become? Lenovo tests it now with a 6.8″ display and calls it the Lenovo PHAB Plus, almost on the borderline of a tablet.
I have come across many people who uses a 8-inch tablet as their phone, so clearly there is a demand for big devices. The PHAB Plus is a crossover between a big Smartphone and a tablet and will make a good media consumption device for watching videos, browsing or playing games.
The PHAB Plus is quiet equipped spec-wise too. To begin with the 6.8-inch IPS display has a fullHD (1080p) resolution packing a 326ppi. Internally, it has a Qualcom Snapdragon 615 chipset, Octacore processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB RAM, Adreno 405 GPU and 32GB storage. There is also a microSD card slot thrown in to accommodate up to 64GB.
On the camera side, the PHAB Plus fires a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash and a 5MP front shooter. A wide angle lens and a pano selfie mode for groufies might charm the selfies. Further, you can also take 1080p HD video at 60 fps.
The dual-SIM PHAB Plus supports 4G and also gets a built-in Dolby ATMOS® 3D Audio soundbox that should provide a good audio when watching movies or playing games.
The Lenovo PHAB Plus is priced at Rs 20,990 and will be available on Amazon.in from October 5 and offline at all Croma and Reliance stores from October 12th.
Does the super-big phablet excite you?
