Since the arrival of the Reno Series with the uniquely wedge-shaped motorized pop-up camera in 2019, Oppo has managed to whip interest with their Reno phones. Though not all the subsequent models were runaway success like the first generation, there were few notable ones in the lineup like the previous gen, Reno 5 Pro. Now that the Reno 6 Pro has arrived, here is my complete thought on the device to help you make the right buying decision. Do note that we are talking about the Mediatek Dimensity fuelled Reno 6 Pro which has been launched in India, while Oppo also has made available Snapdragon 870 powered Reno 6 Pro globally in some markets.

Box contents of Reno 6 Pro

Reno 6 Pro phone

65W charger

Earphone

Type C Cable

Sim ejector Pin

Protective case

Quick guides

Build and Design of Reno 6 Pro

Reno 6 Pro is available in three colour choices in India – Aurora, Majestic Gold and Stellar black. I guess the “Reno glow” Aurora colour might be the most popular choice, the Gold seems a bit outlandish for me and the black model I got is understated but must appeal to those who want a subtle colour. The matte frosted glass back makes it extremely good to grip and highly unlikely to get fingerprint smudges. The sides have a metal frame. It’s also strengthened by Gorilla glass 5. The phone weighs just 177 grams and is at 7.6 mm thickness, making it very comfortable to use for longer use. The curved edges at the front and back, add to the ergonomic handling.

The right side has the power button, with a green tint to it and the left side has the volume buttons, both offers good tactile feedback.

The top is laid flat and has a noise-cancelling mic. The bottom houses the speaker, type C port, mic and SIM tray. There is no 3.5mm audio jack and the SIM tray does not include a memory card slot. There is no dual speaker either.

A rectangle camera housing is at the back, with a small bump. Overall, I think Reno 6 Pro has a good design and build quality, something carried forward from the previous generation Reno 5 Pro.

Reno 6 Pro display

6.55 inches AMOLED

1080 x 2400 pixels

402 ppi density

90Hz, HDR 10+

500 nits (typ), 800 nits (HBM)

20:9 aspect ratio

I really liked the display of Reno 5 Pro and I have no complaints they have retained the same here in Reno 6 Pro. The curved display offers an immersive experience, I did not have any accidental touch issues in my usage. There is a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protective layer.

While you might see panels offering 120Hz in this price segment, and outdoing the 180Hz touch panel offered here, I see no reasons why anyone can complain using this screen. The colours are punchy true to its AMOLED offering, sharp with sufficient brightness even under direct sunlight. While there is HDR 10+ technically, it cannot play HDR videos on streaming apps like Netflix and Prime video which is a bummer.

Audio and Speaker quality of Reno 6 Pro

Then watching a movie or online content needs a good sound backing, while the display is good enough, Oppo could have included a stereo speaker here. The sound is loud but I missed the stereo quality many phones in this category offers these days. Coming to Bluetooth audio codecs, it supports SBC, AAA, Qualcomm Apt X, Apt X HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX TWS+, LDAC, LHDC. I am delighted by the comprehensive list here, which would appeal to audiophiles.

Oppo Reno6 Pro: Performance

Mediatek Dimensity SoC

12GB LPDDR4X RAM

256GB UFS 3.1 storage

The Reno 6 Pro sees a bit of upgrade from Reno 6 Pro here. To begin with, we have Dimensity 1200 SoC replacing the 1000+ and also the storage gets UFS 3.1 boost here over the UFS 2.1 in Reno 5 Pro. While I had used both the phones, trust me, the majority of people won’t notice much of a difference in the real-life performance but it would nevertheless be comfortable to know you are getting a marginal upgrade here.

In my good use, the apps opened pretty good, I did not notice any lag and it was a smooth operator. Well, I was similarly at ease with Reno 5 Pro, just putting it across here. While Snapdragon offers more firepower with their chipsets in this price range, if you are a keen nitpicking gamer, you could explore Snapdragon choices but for the majority again, the Dimensity 1200 carries enough firepower for enjoyable gaming. There is a bit of throttling happening here when games are played extensively.

The Reno6 Pro is a 5G Smartphone. It supports 11 bands, making sure you would not miss out on the 5G bus whenever it arrives in the country.

Reno 6 Pro Camera

64 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 1/2.0″, 0.7µm, PDAF

8 MP, f/2.2, 120˚ (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm

2 MP, f/2.4, (macro)

2 MP, f/2.4, (depth)

4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps; gyro-EIS, HDR

Front : 32 MP, f/2.4, 26mm (wide)

There is no surprise here, it is equipped with the same camera hardware as on the Reno 5 Pro. The selfies come good, with good detailing, though the facial features tend to get smoothened. Surprisingly, I find many normal users like this aspect off the camera. Overall pictures come good, you can check some of the samples. The daylight shots look good with enough details. While there is macro photos and I love taking macro photography, this is not the best macro implementation I have seen. You can follow my Instagram (@LakshmiRajan) for more macro samples.

Oppo Reno 6 Pro Battery

The phone packs a 4500mAh battery. The 65W SuperVOOC charger top the phone from 0-100% in about 37-40 mins. I managed to sail through an entire day with a screen on time of around 6 – 6.5 hours.

Oppo Reno6 Pro: Software

As I write this review, the phone runs on Color OS 11.3 based on Android 11. Oppo has started beta testing Color OS 12 for the Reno 6 Pro, I haven’t tested it yet but you can expect the rollout in the coming months.

I personally like the Color OS treatment these days, they had made vast improvements, the UI looks pleasing. It offers tons of customization and features for users to fiddle around. The current skin is also light and gives a pleasant experience. The UI is not without its share of third-party bloatware apps, which you could remove. Few pre-installed Oppo apps have to be lived with.

There are some neat personalization options for the UI to tweak the icon styles, app layout, colours, fonts, icon shapes etc. While there is no LED notification indicator, you can opt for edge lighting for notification when the screen is off.

Features like gesture and motions actions, quick-access settings like smart sidebar, assistive ball, quick return bubble, quick launch, split-screen, screen recording google lens integration in screenshot etc along with granular control over app settings might delight some users.

Reno6 Pro Verdict

Pros of Reno6 Pro

Good design and build quality

Comfortable ergonomics

Appealing AMOLED curved display

Super quick fast charging

Good performance for most use cases

Cons of Reno6 Pro

No radical upgrade over Reno5 Pro

No stereo speakers

Unimpressive macro photography

One big grouse I have and many share the same thought is that the phones are getting fatter and heavier. When most Smartphone buyers were resigned to the fact, Oppo has brought back the definition of slim with Oppo Reno 4 Pro. A phone that looks slimmer, lighter and with a stellar design that stands out in the crowd. But is there more to the phone than the looks? Let’s unravel it in this Oppo Reno 4 review.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro – A design that can’t go wrong

Measuring 7.7mm and weighing 161 grams, the Reno 4 Pro pushes the boundary in 2020 where almost every phones are closer to 9mm and around 200 grams weight. This definitely feels a delight while holding it. Plus, it looks premium. The front and back are curved, I will talk more about the display in the coming part but the phone is a sizzler when it comes to design. It comes in three aesthetically done colors – silky white, starry night and galactic blue with the last one being a special edition.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro can accommodate 2 SIM + 1 microSD card. VoLTE + VoWiFi supported

When you need to make your phone lighter, there are few choices to make, the primary being the choice of material used. The Reno 4 Pro has a polymer resin for the back panel instead of glass and uses a plastic frame. The matte frosted finish is a good treatment to the phone and also avoids fingerprint smudges. Overall the phone not only looks great but also feels premium on hand.

The back has the quad camera setup stacked one above another in a rectangle module and Oppo branding. The bottom has the speaker mic, USB type C port and audio jack. The right side has the power button highlighted with a green tone. The left side houses the volume buttons and the top has the SIM tray. It can accommodate two SIM and one micro-SD card for storage expansion.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro – Display

Matching the gorgeous design is the larger, crisp and vibrant and curved display. Yes, the brilliant and upmarket curved edge AMOLED display is something not people expect here. Even If the design fails to impress you, the display would definitely grab your attention. The 6.5-inch fullHD+ Super AMOLED display is wrapped with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection. There is a punch-hole cutout in the upper left corner for the front camera. The 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling rate completes the expectations when it comes to butter smooth operations. Though HDR 10 has been dropped. The 500 nits gives adequate brightness levels and the colors have excellent saturation and vibrancy. The blacks are very deep too.

You also get a proper always-on display mode and a system-wide dark mode, which can be scheduled to activate at a given time. The ‘Edge lighting’ feature lights up the curved edges of the screen when you get a new notification and it looks cool.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro Software Features

Over the last two years, Oppo has shown great stride in the Color OS – each upgrade has fine-tuned it and I could easily count Color OS as one of the best custom Android UI in the market now. The Oppo Reno 4 Pro as on this time of review, runs on Android 10 based Color OS 7.2 , though it is expected to be treated with the Android 11 based Color OS 11 shortly. I will update the review when the software updates kicks in to this phone.

On the features side, it is loaded with Game Space, App cloner, Smart sidebar and assistive ball feature for quick access of apps and tools, gesture and motion options including screen-off gestures, raise to wake, flip to mute incoming calls etc.

The in-display fingerprint sensor works like a charm and there is face unlock too. App lock and private safe features are also found.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro performance

There is a single variant of the Reno 4 Pro in India with a 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. It also features dual-band Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.1, multiple satellite navigation systems but NAVIC is not there, and the usual suite of sensors. When it comes to the choice of SoC, Oppo has settled for the Snapdragon 720G, which is the only odd man out in an otherwise seemingly impressive read so far. There is no denying that, it is not a bad chipset, the competition offers a bit more firing power in this price segment. Again, it depends on what you would use the phone for.

On a day to day basis, on usual tasks, one will not have any issues regarding the performance, and it would be adequate enough. Thanks, to the optimized UI, the navigation feels snappier, and multi tasking also is good enough. Unless you are a hard core gamer, you will be at ease here playing Call of Duty like heavy games. And to the phone’s credit, I didn’t notice any sign of heating on extended gaming sessions. The single speaker gets decently loud and you also get Dolby Atmos enhancements.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro Battery

The Oppo Reno 4 Pro has a 4000mAh battery and in my usage, I could manage a little more than a day on a medium use. The star attraction here though is the 65W Super VOOC 2.0 fast charging. It charges the Reno 4 Pro up to 97 percent in flat 30 minutes, which is insanely fast. So even if you run out of battery juice, you can tank it up super fast.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro Camera

I took tons of photos on Reno 4 Pro, I showed them to others and the general consensus is that the photos are good. It tends to slightly over saturate but people seem to like that color render. The photos have a lot of detail.

Reno 4 Pro has a macro mode but it is hidden. While when you go up-close to the subject, it shows macro mode but it is basically the output from the 48 MP camera and not the actual macro camera. To get to the real macro mode, you need to get into the expert mode, tap on the two tree icon and it shows the macro mode. The selfies come out well with natural color tones. The edge detection is pretty good too.

There is video stabilization and it is implemented well. It works the best when you shoot 1080p at 60fps. 4K video is also available but you would find shutter rolling a bit when the camera moves around. Other modes include Slo mo, timelapse, pano and text scanner. Google lens is also integrated.

It took a while for Oppo to bring out their Oppo F11 successor which was launched last year and they begin 2020 with the F15 launch. There is no word yet on if Oppo F15 Pro will make a way out but with the launch of F15, Oppo has at least reiterated their focus on their F series. The Oppo F15 can be termed as a modest upgrade over its predecessor in terms of looks, camera and addition of in-display fingerprint sensor. In India, the Oppo F15 is priced at Rs 19,990 for the 8GB variant, the only variant right now available. In this Oppo F15 review, let’s find what Oppo has manged to squeeze in this upgrade.

What is in the Oppo F15 box:

The F15 phone

User manuals

Sim ejector pin

Soft back case

VOOC 3.0 power adapter

USB Type C cable

Earphone

Oppo F15 Design – the highlight

When I unboxed the phone – I immediately liked the looks. If looks can sell, the Oppo F15 will sell tons. It comes in two colour variants – ‘Unicorn White’ colour and a ‘Lightning’ Black. Without a second thought the white variant if my choice and that is what I have for the review. Second thing, that I liked about the F15 is its form factor. The recent waves of Smartphones are heavier and thicker but measuring 7.9mm in thickness and weighing 172g, the Oppo F15 is lighter on hands. Thanks to its 20:9 aspect ratio, the tall boy design has a narrow waistline, making it again easy to hold.

While the industry trend is towards the glass, the Oppo F15 has a plastic back but flaunts a glass finish. The gradient finish of the unicorn white is a delight. The rear has the vertically arranged quad-camera flanked by an LED flash and oppo branding below. The sides are gently sloped towards the edges.

The bottom has the 3.5mm audio port, mic, USB Type-C port and the speaker.

The top like the bottom has a dimpled curve in the middle and houses a noise-cancelling mic.

The right side has the power button, while the left side has the volume buttons and the SIM tray. It houses a triple slot that can accommodate 2 SIMs and a dedicated memory card. The phone supports dual VoLTE with dual standby.

Oppo F15 Display

6.4 inches AMOLED display

1080 x 2400 pixels

85.5% screen-to-body ratio

Corning Gorilla Glass 5

430 nits brightness

20:9 aspect ratio

The F15 has a beautiful AMOLED display, the colours are vivid and sharp. Even reading under direct sunlight is not a problem. The display settings have screen colour temperature modes to shift between cooler, default and warmer. Eye care mode is also available in the settings. You may have to wait till Color OS 7 releases probably to get the dark mode which is not available now. There is also a anti-flicker toggle. There is no always-on display option.

Oppo F15 – Color OS

Oppo has already announced the Color OS 7 and is being beta tested in some of the phone models. Out of the box though, the Oppo F15 comes with Color OS 6.2 based on Android 9.

Talking about the features, there is a one-hand mode toggle in the quick access settings, there are also kids space, driving mode, focus mode, and grayscale mode. Ya, the screen turns to grayscale when you toggle it on. The OS also provides gesture navigation and also to change the back and menu button positioning. There are quick access features like an assistive ball and smart sidebar to access certain apps or settings on the go quickly. For those who love gesture actions, there is screen-off gestures, double-tap to wake, music control gestures etc. Three-finger screenshots, raise to turn on the screen, smart call options complete the smart gesture and motion actions. Digital wellbeing and parental controls bring some order to the time spent on the phone.

There are many pre-installed apps and bloatware but fortunately, most of the third-party apps can be uninstalled if you like.

Oppo F15 Performance, Gaming

Oppo has for whatever reason decided to stick with the Mediatek Helio P70 that powered the last year’s F11. This is kind of baffling for me. While it is not a bad SoC and in fact, Mediatek came back to reckoning with this capable chipset along with its sibling P60, much water has flown down the bridge since then in the processor side. That the phone comes with only an 8GB variant with 128GB storage is a bit of solace. It uses UFS 2.1 standard storage.

The Oppo F15 is only available in one configuration, which is 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The latter uses the UFS 2.1 standard, which is good. It also stacks the bells and whistles standard sensors including gyroscope. For a phone targetted at the offline market, the lack of FM might be a dampener for some. There is OTG support, in case you want to transfer files via pen drives.

The in-display fingerprint sensor is very fast and accurate, the face recognition is quicker too when there is enough light. App lock and a private safe ensure your apps stay away from prying eyes.

Talking about the performance, as a normal daily driver there should be no reason to complain but considering the chipset, the industry is constantly upgrading with new SoC making way with powerful internals, the Helio P70 is now underwhelming for this price segment. You can play games, can play PUBG in mid-graphic settings but Oppo could have added more fire to the belly to the F15.

Oppo F15 Battery life

Equipped with a 4000 mAh battery and a VOOC 3.0 fast charging support, the Oppo F15 offers a good battery life. I could sail through a full day on good mixed-use. Charging is pretty fast too, with 30 mins pumping up 47 percent and hits around 88% in an hour. It takes about 1 hour 20 minutes for 0-100%.

Oppo F15 Camera

48 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/2.0″, 0.8µm, PDAF

8 MP, f/2.3, 13mm (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm

2 MP B/W, f/2.4, 1/5.0″, 1.75µm

2 MP, f/2.4, 1/5.0″, 1.75µm, depth sensor

Front camera: 16 MP, f/2.0, 26mm (wide), 1/3.1″, 1.0µm

One of the bigger upgrades over the F11 is on the camera front. A quad-camera setup at the rear has a 48MP as the primary sensor, the front camera touts a 16MP. The primary camera shoots 12-megapixel pictures by default with pixel binding but strangely there is no option to choose the 48-megapixel resolution. The camera UI is similar to the other Oppo phones. There is a night mode, timelapse, slo-mo and pro mode.

On good lighting conditions, the pictures come very well. The soft bokeh effect comes out good. The colours are well-produced. The main camera brings out enough detailing in the images.

You can also toggle up the wide-angle camera and then go up close for macro photography.

Coming to the portrait mode, you can adjust the level of blur before taking a snap. The portrait mode worked decently well, the edge detection is pretty good too. In the comparison below, you would notice the non-portrait picture more colourful and brighter. The portrait mode tends to be slightly overexposed.

Again with selfie, I prefered the non-portrait one which was richer in colours. Overall the selfies come out pleasingly well.

You can shoot up to 1080p, there is no 4K video support. EIS works on primary camera but not on wide-angle camera videos. The front camera also supports 1080p video but without stabilization.

Last few years have seen a tectonic shift in the Smartphone industry – the technology has been widely democratized and affordable for the masses. Now brands like Realme are in the forefront to deliver more at smart pricing and Realme X2 Pro is their latest offering that promises a true flagship experience complete with 50W fast charging and 90Hz refresh rate display at a fair price. In this Realme X2 Pro review, let’s unravel everything it has to offer.

Design and Build Quality of Realme X2 Pro

I got here the Neptune blue colour variant, while it is also available in Lunar white colour option. Personally I liked the eye-candy white colour variant with pearl-like gradient finish but has to settle with the Blue variant I received for testing. After a couple of days of use, the blue looks cool too, the light plays subtle variations in colour shades.

An aluminium metal chassis adds to the strength while the front and back are all-glass affair backed up by Gorilla 5 glass. The phone is tad heavier at 199 grams and measures 8.7mm thickness. On the positive side, it feels sturdy while using and the weight balance is done well. While it is not extremely slippery, I would always recommend using a phone with a case, just in case to be on the safer side. The box comes with a soft back case.

The top and bottom are flat with a slight dent in the middle. The top houses a noise-cancelling mic and the bottom houses the speaker, type-C port, mic and audio jack. Yes, the 3.5mm port is not forgotten.

The right side has the power button and the SIM tray. It supports dual SIM but there is no memory card slot. So make a prudent choice when you buy the storage variants with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB on offer. The phone supports dual VoLTE. I was also told the X2 Pro will soon get support WiFi calling (VoWiFi) via a new update. The left side has the volume buttons. The phone features a 4×4 MIMO antenna to ensure proper data or Wi-Fi signal irrespective of how you are holding the phone while gaming.

To sum it up, the Realme X2 Pro is not outlandish but has a feel-good look and feel about it to please everyone.

Display of Realme X2 Pro

Here is where Realme has amped up its aggressive presence. With 90Hz refresh rate on the display, they have literally made it a standard for any future flagship phones. The 6.5-inches screen is a Super AMOLED panel with Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution. The display is certified for HDR10+ playback and supports a 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut range.

With a 1000 nits brightness rating, the legibility under direct sunlight is a non-issue. The display setting offers control over screen colour temperature with a slider to cooler to warmer., The setting also has night shield which is the eye comfort mode and low brightness flicker-free eye-care mode. There are two colour modes to choose from, Vivid and Gentle. The Vivid colour mode is based on DCI-P3 colour range while the Gentle mode represents sRGB colours. The screen refresh rate can be scaled down to 60Hz to conserve battery life if you want to.

The X2 Pro has Widevine L1 DRM certification which means you can enjoy the Netflix and Prime videos on high resolutions and are not restricted.

The 90Hz refresh rate offers butter smooth experience and the screen is very vivid and bright. Some may feel it slightly oversaturated but with my understanding of the Indian consumer preference, the larger section would enjoy the popping colours the display offers.

Realme X2 Pro OS – Color OS but Realme UI is coming

So far the Realme devices have been running on Android-based Color OS it shares with Oppo Smartphones but Realme is working on Realme UI to differentiate their phones and is currently on the beta testing on few of their devices. The new UI would be coming to X2 Pro too very sooner. At the time am drafting this review, it runs on Color OS 6.1 with Android 9 base.

You get dark mode, a bunch of customization options including navigation gestures, gesture and motions control for screen off gestures, smart call motion controls and extra add ons like an assistive ball, a smart sidebar for quick accesses.

The in-display fingerprint sensor is very quick and face recognition swift to respond too. Additionally, you also get app unlock via these sensors.

Hardware muscle – punching full weight

When it comes to performance, the Realme X2 Pro is a top gun armed with Snapdragon 855+ chipset that adorns every flagship worth the salt this season. The Snapdragon 855 Plus is a slightly overclocked version of the 855 chipsets, the GPU is a bit tweaked to offer 15% better performance. The phone is available in three choices – 6GB+64GB, 8GB+128GB and going full throttle with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

The best in class internals means you get the best performance you can drive out of a Smartphone at this age. You can throw any game at it and it will handle at easy and also 90Hz refresh rate means you can have even more smoother gameplay on supporting games.

With HDR10+ playback and higher nits level, watching your favourite movies on the screen would be a pleasant experience. The stereo speakers, AMOLED panel all aid in the audio-visual experience.

On a short note, there is nothing to complain about the capability of the X2 Pro.

Realme X2 Pro Camera

 64 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/1.7″, 0.8µm, PDAF

13 MP, f/2.5, 52mm (telephoto), 1/3.4″, 1.0µm, PDAF, 2x optical zoom

8 MP, f/2.2, 16mm (ultrawide), 1/3.2″, 1.4µm, PDAF

2 MP, f/2.4, 1/5.0″, 1.75µm, depth sensor

Vertical quad-camera setup is centred at top of the rear side of X2 Pro. The main camera is a Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 64MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. It uses quad-Bayer arrangement to capture 16MP photos. If you want to go full pixels, there is a dedicated 65MP mode to capture the photos in full glory of detailing but also makes it a heavy file. The primary camera is complemented by a 13MP telephoto lens, an 8MP ultra-white sensor and a 2MP depth sensor.

For regular photography, the phone does justice. The images are vivid and adequately detailed. There is a chroma boost on toggle for those who prefer more pronounced colours in their photos.

The X2 Pro is also equipped with 5x optical zoom and 20x hybrid zoom. It manages to do well in this front compared with its competitors in this segment barring the likes of Reno.

The X2 Pro also comes handy with macro photography and can keep you adequately busy if you love taking macros. There is no dedicated macro setting but going up close on wide-angle mode gets you the job.

The wide-angle is a good addition too though not very sharp enough as in normal mode. The night mode is a bit forgettable affair with noise creeping in. It lacks OIS but EIS helps to an extent for videos. You can take videos up to 4K @ 60fps.

Battery Life – Unbelievably fast!

Another area where the X2 Pro takes the limelight is with its 50W SuperVOOC fast charging technology. The adapter comes bundled out of the box. It can fire up the 4000mAh battery from 0% to 100% in 35 minutes flat. As far as the battery life is concerned it can sail through a day at ease and even when down, it’s just 30 minutes away from a full charge.

Verdict

What works for Realme X2 Pro

Smoother 90Hz Refresh rate display

Ultra-fast 50W SuperVOOC charging technology

Rich Dual Stereo Speaker

Decent Camera

Gaming powerhouse

Value for money

What X2 Pro lacks

No OIS

No expandable storage

Night mode could have been better

Overall, Realme X2 Pro punches above its weight. It’s a flagship phone at an affordable price. The 90Hz display and the crazily fast 50W SuperVOOC charging rewrites the budget flagship expectations and like I said in the beginning it truly democratizes the flagship experience.

We can never write off a legend. They have an uncanny ability to bounce back. With the launch of M series, we can say that to Samsung too. The South Korean company is a household name when it comes to mobiles, a familiar name with a tremendous brand recall but the last couple of years the company has been fighting off stiff competition in the budget smartphone segment. Impressively, they still manage to be on the top rankings in spite of new challengers to its thrown. That speaks volume of its brand pull. With the launch of the Galaxy M20 and the M10, Samsung has proved it can strike back but have they delivered? Read on my Galaxy M20 review.
Galaxy ‘M20‘ is priced at Rs 12,990 for the 4GB+64GB variant, while the 3GB+32GB variant costs Rs 10,990. A sweet spot as far as volumes are concerned and a segment that sees the maximum action in the Indian Smartphone industry.

Box contents of Galaxy M20

Out of the box you get:

M20 Smartphone

15 watts charger

Type C cable

Pin

documents

There is no earphone included, its not a surprise since most brands tend to skip it these days.

Galaxy M20 Design and build quality

156.4 x 74.5 x 8.8 mm

186 grams

Polycarbonate

Samsung has shied away from the trends of the season like the gradient paint job or choice of metal or glass, rather they have opted for functional design while also helping itself with some cost-cutting. The design is not an eye turner but how it compensates for the lack of flamboyant design, is the inclusion of USB Type-C port which is still a rare find in this segment.

The phone is available in black and blue colors. The corners and sides are well rounded and there is no sharp edges anywhere. The rear has the dual camera, LED Flash, fingerprint sensor and the Samsung branding. The bottom houses the audio jack, type C port, noice cancelling mic and speaker grille.

The top just has a single mic. The corners are rounded for good ergonomics.

The M20 accomodates two SIM and also has a dedicated slot for microSD card. The phone supports dual VoLTE. So you can have two VoLTE SIMs active.

Galaxy M20 Display

Infinity-v display

PLS TFT

6.3 inches

1080 x 2340 pixels

409 ppi

19.5:9 aspect ratio

83.6% screen-to-body ratio

When I first heard that Samsung has used TFT display on the M20, I was frankly disappointed but it changed when I had my hands on the device. The PLS TFT display is surprisingly good. Many of the recent phones I have seen with TFT display had a washed out display or poor viewing angles but that is not the case with M20. The screen is not warmer but pleasant to stare at, a bit on the cooler side.

And then there is the dew drop notch or what Samsung calls as Infinity-V display. The 6.3-inches display offers fullHD+ resolution. Hidden in the display setting deep inside full screen apps sub-setting is a hide camera option which hides the small notch in case you want to go old school. There is navigation gesture option in the display settings and other nit bits like auto brightness, icon frames, font styles. If you want videos on Youtube and Netflix to go around the notch, make sure you go to the full apps settings and include them in the list.

Outdoor visibility is good and the colors are not saturated and popping out like Samsung’s AMOLED display but is leaned more towards natural colors. The screen is protected by a layer of Asahi’s Dragontrail glass.

Galaxy M20 Software Features

Android Oreo 8.1

Experience UI

Samsung has stuck to the Experience UI instead of the One UI they have recently introduced. Out of the box currently it runs on Android Oreo 8.1 but Samsung says they will push the Pie update soon. The UI is feature rich and offers game mode, one handed mode, finger gesture action on fingerprint sensor to quickly access notification panel, split windows, direct call that connect upon lifting the phone close to your ear, easy mute to mute incoming calls and alarms by turning your phone face down. The fingerprint sensor is not the fastest but works well without any false reading. The face unlock is a mixed bag. While there is no app lock feature by default, you can head over to Galaxy app store and download S-secure app for the feature. FM Radio is available.

Galaxy M20 Performance

Powering the device is a brand new Exynos 7904 built on a 14 nm process. Samsung says the processor is made specifically for Indian user requirements. It is an octa-core processor which has two ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 1.8GHz for high power tasks and six ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz for the regular tasks. They are mated to a Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. There is a 3GB and 4GB RAM variants available. What I reviewed is the 4GB version and I would suggest you too to go for this in case you made up your mind over M20, since it packs a 64GB storage compared to the 32GB storage the 3GB variant packs.
The first thing most want to know these days is does the smartphone play PUBG well? The M20 plays the PUBG on mid-graphics by default and you might want to stay with it or can even lower the graphics for a more smoother game play. To be honest, it is not the gaming Smartphone but if you want a Smartphone that handles gaming too well, the M20 won’t disappoint you. I could play PUBG and apart from few frame drops it played well and got me few chicken dinner in the process. Heating is within the normal range I have seen in many phones and is restricted to the camera module area.
Normal day to day tasks are handled well. Switching between apps were smooth, and it doesn’t seem to be aggressive in killing the apps in the background, which is good. When it comes to sensor, many of the grouse against the previous affordable phones of Samsung were the lack of some important sensors but they have set it right this time with M20. You gyroscope, orientation sensor, proximity sensor, magnetic sensor on-board. Notification light is given a miss though.

Galaxy M20 – a big battery boost

Moving on to the battery performance, Samsung Galaxy M20 ticks the right box when it comes to battery by including a massive 5000mAh battery. To compliment it, the 15 watts charger can fully charge the phone in 2 hours. If you are heavy Smartphone user or someone constantly on the move, the big battery on this phone would be a life saver. You can easily expect a 1.5 days with a single full charge on medium use.

Selfie: 8 MP, f/2.0

The ultrawide is a commendable inclusion in this segment. The following pic is a normal shot.

And this one is taken with wide angle. There is a fisheye orientation which can be corrected in the edit setting.

Day light pictures under good lighting conditions come good.

Low light pictures are just about average.

There is live focus or portrait mode option in both front and rear. Selfies come good even though the phone packs only an 8MP sensor while many of the rivals sport double digit megapixel sensors. The bokeh is soft and adds a good effect to the pictures.
In short, the M20 packs a decent camera, though not the best in the segment.

Verdict

Finally, Samsung has a decent phone in the affordable segment which I could actually recommend to people. They have got the pricing right and M20 offers a decent value for money. If you are someone who want a trusted brand, give importance to larger battery life and a decently good performing Smartphone, then the Samsung Galaxy M20 might not disappoint you.

Xiaomi India is having a dream run in India topping the chart as the biggest smartphone seller in India. Much of the success of the brand could be attributed to the stupendous success of their Redmi Note series in India. At the start of this year, they introduced a "pro" variant to the Redmi Note 5 which had a stellar camera performance and soon catapulted it to a hot selling smartphone in the market. With "notch" getting mainstream and attention, the company has updated the lineup with the launch of Redmi Note 6 Pro. Can the Note 6 Pro continue the winning streak? Let's find out in this review.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro design

In terms of size and design, the Note 6 Pro is almost similar to its predecessor when kept side by side face down. On a closer observation, you will find a few minute changes in details – the Note 6 Pro in spite of a bigger display is slightly shorter by a fraction. The metal backplate merges with the plastic frame around the phone slightly differently in both the phones. While the back plate has straight cut on top and bottom in the Note 5 Pro, it has curved smooth edges on the Note 6 Pro. Otherwise, the camera module, fingerprint sensor all find similar positioning. The camera module slightly protrudes out in both the phones.

The front has some refreshing update to the Note 6 Pro – it has a bigger display with a notch at the top. The notch is prominent and wider. This is the first Xiaomi phone with a notch in India. The bezels are thinner too compared to its predecessor which helps in larger display real estate.
The power and volume buttons are on the right. Both are easy to reach even for small palms I have. The top has 3.5mm headphone jack, a secondary mic and IR blaster to act as a remote to control other compatible devices.

The bottom has micro-USB port flanked by grilles, though only the right houses a loudspeaker.

The left side has the hybrid dual-SIM which means there is no dedicated microSD card slot.

Weighing 182 grams, the phone offers good ergonomics and the metal back gives a solid build quality feel when holding the phone.

Like it or not, 2018 has accepted notched display and Redmi Note 6 Pro embraces it with wider arms literally. The notch is wider and it also houses the dual front camera. It also has notification light which some of the notched displays skips. The full-screen display settings offer an option to hide the notch. The Note 6 Pro has a 6.26″ IPS LCD FHD+ display of 1,080 x 2,280 pixels. While the display is backed by Corning Gorilla Glass, the company was shy of mentioning the version and I suspect it to be Gorilla 3. The display packs 403ppi which is good.

The display is a strong point of the Redmi note 6 pro and can be safely put as the best in the segment. It pans out 480 nits of brightness. The blacks are deep thanks to 1500:1 contrast ratio. It has a maximum brightness level of 1.3nits. The sunlight legibility was decent.
Colours are punch, the images are vivid. The display setting has an adaptive brightness (which I disabled since it tends to mess with while playing PUBG when there are darker areas), contrasts and colours setting let you choose between default, warm and cool colours. There is also automatic contrast, increased contrast and standard contrast setting to choose from. The display setting also has a reading mode which is Xiaomi’s take on eye comfort mode. Double tap to wake option is also there.

Redmi Note 6 Pro Software Features

The MIUI of Mi phones has many backers since it offers a lot of features. The Redmi Note 6 Pro runs on MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. There are pre-installed apps like Mi Drop, Mi Store, Mi Remote, Amazon app, Facebook, NewsPoint, Dailyhunt and UC browser and few others along with Google’s suite of apps. I quickly uninstalled Dailyhunt which was spamming with notifications, any case I don’t use that app either.
A swipe to the right from the main home screen gives you a page a search bar, app shortcuts section which can be edited to include your favourite apps, you can also quickly check train PNR status from a bar there and the page also has app recommendations, stock ticker and a notes tab.
The MIUI offers full-screen gesture navigation. It can be enabled in the full-screen display settings. There is a new Enterprise mode which I assume would allow creating a separate enterprise profile as of now it is not activated.
The usual MIUI features that include button and gesture shortcuts, one-handed mode, quick ball, dual apps, second space are all included. These are some of the features many of the end consumers like about MIUI.

Performance of Redmi Note 6 Pro

The internals of the Redmi note 6 pro shares the same Snapdragon 636 processor from its predecessor. The phone comes with 4GB/6GB RAM options. While the processor is a workhorse for daily tasks and also offers good battery optimizations, it shows signs of age in terms of gaming. It is still capable of running most apps and games. PUBG is played on low graphics settings by default, while the game is extremely well playable, the graphics show weakness especially when you compare it with Smartphones like Mi A2 that runs on Snapdragon 660. I didn’t have any issue with multitasking. Call quality is good.

Battery life of Redmi Note 6 Pro

The strong forte of the Redmi Note series has always been the battery life. Like the earlier generations, the Note 6 Pro also packs in a 4000mAh battery. It has QuickCharge 3.0 support but the box comes with only 10 watts charger. You could buy a QC 3.0 charger if you want to speed up the charging time which is around 2 hours 15 minutes now with the box charger. Even for a heavy user, the phone should last a day and last longer to the next day on normal use.

Camera Performance of Redmi Note 6 Pro

Xiaomi has stuck to the same dual-camera setup of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, so you have the 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel at the rear. The later for depth sensing when taking portrait shots. The sensor though has been updated to 1.4-micron pixel size and dual autofocus. It has a f/1.9 aperture which theoretically translates to better low light compared to the f/2.2 on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The selfie camera sees a dual camera this time with a 20-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel for depth sensing.
AI has been the key talking point of the camera in 2018 and Xiaomi has covered it on Note 6 Pro as well. There is AI scene recognition that Xiaomi claims is adept at recognizing 32 scenes. The selfie camera too can see through 12 scenes using AI. Both the front and back have an AI toggle.
The Redmi Note 6 Pro improves upon its predecessor which already had an impressive camera. Day light pictures offer decent details and the right amount of exposure levels. There is an auto HDR mode to balances out for evenly good-looking pictures. AI also was capable of screen recognition to get the right levels for what the camera sees. Edge detection was good in portraits. There is an option to adjust the level of blur, add light trails, and adjust studio lighting.
[gallery link="file" columns="5" ids="14388,14389,14390,14391,14392"]
Selfies come out good, the portrait mode also works well for the front camera. There is also auto HDR here. Redmi Note 6 Pro can take videos up to 1080p. EIS option is available.

Here is a sample with and without portrait mode on the selfie camera.

Verdict:

Redmi Note 6 Pro is a minor update to its illustrious predecessor – it brings in the notch, bigger display and slightly improved camera with AI onboard. Throughout this year, Redmi Note 5 Pro has been my most recommended phone under ₹15K. With a larger vivid display, solid battery life, impressive camera, the Redmi Note 6 Pro is yet again a dependable buy. Yes, there is tight competition from Honor 8X but if you put your hard earned money on this phone, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a safe buy.

The under ₹10,000 entry-level segment is the newly hotly contested arena in Indian Smartphone market with everyone wanting a pie of it. Asus who have revived their Indian story with the fairly successful Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Zenfone 5Z are aiming to consolidate their presence with the launch of two entry-level Smartphones - Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1. While the former is more affordable at Rs 5,999 the later is slightly expensive at Rs 7,499. Both the phones share almost similar internals while deviating slightly, we shall find out about them in our review.

What is common between Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1?

Both the Smartphones come with a similar 5.45-inch HD+ display with screen resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels, 18:9 aspect ratio, 400 nits brightness, 800:1 contrast ratio and 65 per cent NTSC colour gamut.
Powering both the Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1 by Snapdragon 430 processor along with Adreno 505 GPU.
The rear camera is 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, 1.12-micron pixel size, PDAF and LED flash in both the phones.

What are the differences between Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1?

The Zenfone Lite L1 as the name mentions is a lighter version with a 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. Whereas the Max M1 has a 3GB RAM and 32GB storage option.
The front camera varies between both with a 5MP equipped with the Lite L1 whereas the Max M1 has a slightly better megapixel with an 8MP selfie camera.
On the battery side, the Lite L1 has a 3000mAh battery while the Max M1 has a 4000mAh battery pack inside.
The Zenfone Max M1 features a fingerprint sensor and face unlock, while the Lite L1 is only equipped with a facial recognition feature.

Design and build quality of Lite L1 and Max M1

Both the Smartphones are made of plastic and have a similar design. The only giveaway is at the rear with the Max M1 having a fingerprint scanner. Also, the camera module is different in both the phones, though it’s a single camera, the Max M1 has a capsule module giving it a faux-dual camera setup look. The build quality is average. The phones are available in black and gold colours.

Both the phones have a triple slot SIM trays that can accommodate two SIMs and one dedicated microSD card. They don’t support dual VoLTE which means only one SIM support 4G at a time.

The phones are compact in size and extremely comfortable for one hand use. They are also lightweight.

Software features of Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1

Both the phones run on Android Oreo with ZenUI on top. Asus has made good progress in the UI skimming out most of the bloatware that plagued the ZenUI in the past. There are few third-party pre-installed apps like Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and necessary Google apps. The UI also comes with Asus own apps such as Weather, Sound Recorder, Mobile Manager, and File Manager. The PowerMaster battery app gives different battery modes and power saving options.
There is no FM app, OTG is supported.
The fingerprint sensor in Max M1 works decently well for the category and the face recognition on both the phones are fairly good too.

Performance of Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1

The Snapdragon 430 is slightly aged out now, though it still works for an entry-level smartphone. It is strictly meant for basic tasks. While the Max M1 is a little bit better equipped with a 3GB RAM, the Lite L1 struggles a bit with longer load times and random slowdowns due to its 2GB RAM. If your main use of a Smartphone is called, WhatsApp, watching Youtube and social apps, both the phones should suffice. Casual games can be played, while even PUBG can be attempted the experience might not be very smoother.
Out of the 16GB of storage, the Lite L1 has, the available storage is about 8GB for apps and games. So if you are someone who is habitual of installing many apps or games, you should consider Max M1 instead. The phone doesn’t allow microSD card to be used as a fixed storage to mount apps.

Camera performance of Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1

The camera app is identical in both the phones, so is the rear camera performance. The app has Beautify, Panorama and Time Lapse modes, apart from the usual Photo and Video modes. The quick toggles include HDR, the flash, portrait mode, and a timer.

Zenfone Lite L1 Camera Samples:

[gallery link="file" columns="5" ids="14353,14354,14355,14356,14357"]
The camera performance can be summed as average. Shots taken at daylight tend to be better in both the phones. Though it lacks a bit o details. The color reproduction is fairly good. Edge detection is not the best but is manageable. Selfie come decently well in Lite L1 as compared to Max M1, though the later has a better megapixels. Focus tend to struggle a bit during macro shots. As expected in this price range, the low light pictures are bit noisy and misses out on details.

Battery performance of Zenfone Lite L1 and Max M1

If battery life is a big concern for you, you should be thinking of Max M1 which has a bigger 4000mAh battery and better battery life between the two. It helps to power the phone for one and half a day easily. The Zefone Lite one on a moderate use can sail through a day.

Verdict

While Asus has made a decent attempt at reaching over the segment, there is tough competition with the likes of Redmi 6 and RealMe C1. There is also Infinix Smart 2 in the picture. What might work for Asus is the non-Chinese tag and also the branding which is still positive amongst the consumer mind. The goodwill the Zenfone Max M1 Pro gained with constant updates might also give the new phones the edge. If you are looking for an entry-level Smartphone for basic tasks, the Lite L1 could work but between the two I would suggest the Max M1, which packs the extra RAM, storage and battery life.]]>

Lenovo! Even if they were lying low for few seasons in India, the brand name is still intact and it generates interest when they launch new phones. Afte a brief hiatus they are back with two new Smartphones – Lenovo K9 and A5. The former is priced at ₹8,999 and the later is an entry-level budget smartphone at ₹6,999. What you are going to read now is the Lenovo K9 review and let’s dig into to see if this Smartphone makes sense in this crowded sub-10K segment in India.

Lenovo K9 Design and build quality

Glass used to be the choice of premium Smartphones just a few seasons ago but not anymore. Lenovo K9 comes with a neat glass back that immediately add it to the good looks book. The back has a dual camera at the rear placed horizontally and a dual LED flash. A little below at the centre is the fingerprint sensor. The sensor is easy to access with your finger. The corners are rounded and in spite of being a glass back, the phone is not so slippery and fits well in your palms.

What really surprised though is the USB Type C port which most phones double its price too give a miss. Apart from the charging port, we have the speaker, mic and audio jack at the bottom.

The K9 measures 8mm and weights 155 grams. The right side has the power button and volume buttons.

The left side has the SIM tray, its a hybrid slot so you can have two SIMs or one SIM and a memory card. It supports dual 4G VoLTE.

While the design is not a sizzler to win by looks at first sight. The glass back and a good ergonomics make it to the top grade in this price segment. The type-C port definitely scores a few more brownies for K9.

Display of Lenovo K9

The K9 features a 5.7-inch IPS LCD display with an HD+ (720 x 1440 pixels) resolution on an 18:9 aspect ratio. The bezels are prominent on the top and bottom thus resulting in a 74.8% screen-to-body ratio. There is no notch in the display which might be a breather for some. There are on-screen navigation buttons, there is a navigation bar setting to interchange the position of back and menu buttons.
Talking about the quality of the display, the brightness level is good, so are the viewing angles and sunlight readability. Considering the segment it comes in, the display leaves no room for complaint.

Lenovo K9 Software – Features

Lenovo Smartphones used to come with Vibe UI with many extra features but the K9 opts for a simplified user experience. It runs on stock Android with Oreo 8.1 out of the box and sticks to basics. There are few stuff added like three finger screenshot and gesture actions to quickly launch apps by drawing on the screen. There are a bunch of pre-installed apps like puzzle pets, sonic runner, spider-man games and utilities like SyncIT and UC browser. FM is supported. My major concern would be how much committed Lenovo is with updates. Their track record, unfortunately, has been poorer both with Lenovo brand and Motorola and if they have to regain the market, they have to work on their update schedule. Smartphone users have become increasingly more aware of the security updates, Android schedules and can be demanding. Right now the UI doesn’t show any signs of lag and works fine.

Lenovo K9 Performance

This is where it all boils down right? Before we go past this, let’s be conservative with our expectations and be at ground to the fact that this is an entry-level Smartphone with frugal hardware. The K9 is powered by Helio P22 processor from MediaTek combined with a 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. If this processor rings a bell somewhere, its the same the recently launched Redmi 6 features. The P22 processor is an octa-core processor with eight Cortex A53 cores running at 2GHz and combines PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The chipset also offers AI processing with its NeuroPilot engine. The processor is one of the better entry level chips out there. It should run through your basic tasks and social apps like Whatsapp, facebook, twitter etc without any issues. Casual games are playable. PUBG? yes, but under low graphics and the lag would show up. Call quality is good and the speaker is decent. The phone lacks sensors like the gyroscope and magnetic sensor, so VR is ruled out.

Lenovo K9 Camera Performance

Rear: 13 MP, f/2.2, 1/3″, 1.12µm, PDAF
5 MP, f/2.4, 1.12µm, depth sensor
Front: 13 MP, f/2.2, 1/3″, 1.12µm, PDAF
5 MP, f/2.4, 1.12µm, depth sensor
The K9 features in total four cameras – dual camera at both sides with LED flash included for the selfie too. The maximum supported video capture is 1080p at 60fps. There is portrait mode on both sides. The edge detection might not blow you away but is decent for a camera at this price segment though at few times it’s a hit or miss. Daylight pictures are decent. You can judge by the camera samples below.
[gallery link="file" columns="5" ids="14239,14240,14241,14242,14243,14244,14245,14246,14247,14250"]

Battery performance of K9

The K9 is packed with a 3000mAh battery. It does not offer fast charging and it takes about 3 hours to go up from 0% to 100%. The USB Type C port is a surprise addition though. With an HD+ panel and a not so demanding P22 processor, the mobile can last a day on a moderate use.

Verdict

What makes K9 a killer!

Clean good looks

Glass back

USB Type C port

Four camera talking point (if not the performance)

Software update concerns

few missing sensors

slow charging

OK-yish camera

Has the killer returned? No. Has Lenovo delivered a decent phone? Yes to an extend. What would spoil the show is while Lenovo was cooling its heads, the segment has become piping hot and competitive with phones like Redmi 6, Realme C1 and Honor 7S out there. The competition is real crazy here and Lenovo to find its place back needs a lot of groundwork to win the faith. If Lenovo can win a small audience with timely updates to K9 and followup models it can regain the past glory, will they do? time will tell.

Motorola has had turbulent times recently but the Moto brand is still intact and every time they release a phone, it kindles the interests. But what had slowed them down are factors like the slow software updates and skewed pricing in terms of value for money especially in markets like India where pricing can really be a deal breaker. Motorola wants to amend their mistakes and Moto One Power seems to be a product in the right direction. While Motorola has been delivering near stock android UI added with their Moto experiences, with One Power they have opted for Google's Android One program for seamless updates. As for as pricing is concerned Rs 15,999 for Moto One Power seems an earnest attempt to regain the Indian market. Will this two be enough to win the faith or does the new Smartphone have more? Read our Motorola One Power review to find out.

The One Power looks solid but also has a heft. It weighs 205 grams and measures 8.4mm in thickness largely due to the big 5000mAh battery inside. It’s a compromise one has to make for the extra battery life. While the side frame is made of plastics the back panel is made of aluminium metal.
The rear houses the dual camera set up in a vertical housing with a dual-tone LED flash in between the two lenses, a fingerprint sensor with the famous Moto logo on the scanner area and Android One branding at the bottom. The plastic frame all around also avoids the antenna lines on the design.

The top has the audio jack and secondary microphone. The bottom features the speaker grille, type C 1.0 port and mic.

The right side has power and volume buttons. Both the buttons are easy to access.

The left side houses the dual SIM tray with a dedicated microSD card slot. There is no dual-VoLTE support on this phone. Though the company says they are testing the support and might roll out the update later to enable it.

Display of One Power

It’s the year 2018 and the notorious notch makes an appearance in Moto phones with the One Power, like it or not there is no option either to hide the notch. The 6.2-inch LTPS IPS display features a fullHD+ resolution (1080 x 2246 pixels) stacking 403 pixels per inch on a 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density is quite impressive. After the Poco F1 fiasco, the tech community suddenly woke up to the Widevine’s L1 certification, the Moto One Power does have it and hence you can stream content in high definition from Netflix, Hotstar and Amazon Prime video.

The display offers good viewing angles and outdoor legibility is also decent enough. The display settings can be tweaked for colour temperature and you can choose between standard and vivid output. The brightness level goes up to 536 nits. Overall, the One Power offers a good display.

Moto One Power Android One Experience

The biggest shift the One Power sees is by embracing the Android One. Google certification mandates software security updates for three years and Android version updates for the next two iterations basically guaranteeing Android Pie and Q. This should bring cheers and some respect to the Moto fans and the One Power buyers. Well, that’s theoretical, the reality differs. The last security update I have received on the device was on August 1 and none since then. Hope Motorola addresses this swiftly and changes the perception.
There is no bloatware as expected on Android One phones and it runs on clean, vanilla stock Android Oreo. Though Motorola has managed to squeeze in few of their Moto experiences like twist to launch the camera, chop to turn on the flashlight and the always-on display. The interface is smooth, though I did find a bit of lag when too many apps were stacked on the background.

Performance of Moto One Power

In this segment, there are many phones powered by Snapdragon 636 like the Redmi Note 5 Pro, Nokia 6.1 Plus, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and One Power joins the list. It combines the chipset with a 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. Pitched against such mighty competition, the One Power has jumped straight into baptism by fire. The Snapdragon 636 is a workhorse for daily tasks and gaming, though the Snapdragon which has recently crept into this segment enjoys slightly better GPU. The chipset also supports Bluetooth 5.0 and latest Wi-Fi standards along with dual 4G and dual Standby.
Can I play PUBG? that’s the most frequent question I face when I talk about a new phone. Yes, you can but it plays on the low setting by default. I have seen other phones on the same chipset playing on mid-graphic setttings so this is a bit of a surprise. Though it does manages to play without much lags. Call quality is good. There is Dolby Audio and with its equalizers and presets. The sound quality is pretty good. FM radio is also found and the phone supports OTG. The fingerprint sensor is a bit slow to wake up but works well and there is no face unlock feature.

Motorola One Power Camera Review

Like every phone these days, the One Power also features a dual camera at the back. It has a 16MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture lens and a 5MP secondary camera for depth sensing with a f/2.2 aperture. For the selfies, there is a 12MP sensor with f/2.0 lens.
There is portrait mode for both front and back. The front also has a LED flash which can also be used as a torch. The camera app has a Google Lens mode. The rear camera supports video up to 4K but there is no Slo mo or time lapse features. The Expert mode lets you control white balance, exposure, ISO, shutter, and focus before clicking. You can take photos in different aspect ratio including wider 18.7:9 apart from the standard 4:3 and 16:9. The samples below are shot on 18.7:9 aspect ratio.
Day light pictures are good and has good detailing and color reproduction. The portrait mode is not very sharp and has a softness to it. Selfies come good for this segment. Overall the One Power has a decent camera though not the best in the segment.

Battery Performance of Motorola One Power

The biggest highlight of the One Power is its massive 5000mAh battery and to sweeten the deal comes with a 15watts turbo charger. So you get practically a bigger battery, better battery life and a quick charging too. A 30 minutes charge upped the battery from 0% to 30% and 50% was acheived in 50 minutes and 75% in 90 minutes. As far as the battery life is concerned, it can run on a longer stretch. In my HD video loop test, it covered almost 16 hours which is pretty impressive. On a normal use, you can manage two days of battery life but real life scenario purely depends on how you put the phone to use but still expect it to do well compared to most of the competition and slighly better than the Max Pro M1 which also has the same 5000mAh battery.

Verdict:

Motorola has given its best shot at the Indian market with the Motorola One Power. They have also finally managed to price it sensibly for this segment. Plus, the shift to Android One might augur well too.
Its winning aces include:

the solid built,

5000mAh battery

Turbo charging

On a down side, the phone is slightly bulky and has more functional design than being attractive. It’s a trade off one has to make for a reliable, durable battery life on a phone. The One Power is not perfect in every sense but not everyone look for the perfect camera or gaming on a phone. Battery is crucial for many and the One Power races ahead of the rest when it comes to power.

People have different requirements for a Smartphone – some needs a better gaming smartphone, for some camera would be a deal breaker and for many battery should be solid. If you are one of those who give prime importance to the battery, Infinix Note 5 should be something you should look at in the affordable price segment. It comes with a 4500mAh battery and also comes clean with Android One running. For more on this battery powerhouse continue with our Infinix Note 5 review.

Note 5 has a shiny back with a glass finish, although its plastic build. The sides sweep down and merge with the frame. It does gather fingerprint easily. The phone is available in three colors – black, grey and the blue I have here. It’s a decent look, nothing to gaga about though. The fingerprint sensor is slightly pitted in which makes it inconvenient initially until you get used to the placement. A single camera with quad flash sits at a corner and the back is complete with Infinix, Note, and Android One branding.

The phone measures 175 grams and measures 8.65 mm in thickness. Considering it houses a massive 4500mAh battery inside, the extra heft is unavoidable. The right side has the power button, volume buttons and even the SIM tray unlike the common practice of having the SIM tray at the left side, it shouldn’t bother in anyways though.

Note 5 accommodates triple sim slots – two for SIMs and one for microSD card for memory expansion. The phone supports 4G SIM on both the slots and also has dual VoLTE feature.

At the bottom, you have the audio jack, mic, micro USB port and the speaker.

Display of Infinix Note 5

5.99″ LCD display

2160×1080 pixels

18:9 aspect ratio

2.5D glass

500 nits brightness

The Note 5 has a bright screen, the display is good at this segment, no complaints about it. There is no mention about Corning Gorilla glass so I assume it doesn’t sport it. The display setting has no blue light filter, quiet surprising as I thought it would default feature on Android One program. There is a LED notification light and adaptive brightness setting toggle.

Infinix Note 5 – Android One

Android One makes sure you get a very clean stock Android experience on this phone. There is no bloatware, no unnecessary pre-installed apps you need to worry. Being an Android One smartphone, the phone is committed to next two iterations of the Android versions – the Android Pie and the K. The updates should rollout seamlessly since there are not many extra tweakings on the phone.
Feature-wise the phone has flip to mute, 3 finger screenshot and one hand mode. The fingerprint sensor the fastest I have come across but is reliable. There is no app lock. There is no face recognition.

Performance of Infinix Note 5

Under the hood and powering the device is Mediatek Helio P23, the chipset is into 12 months cycle since its launch and can best be an entry-level midrange chipset from Mediatek staples. It works for normal day to day tasks. It also has a fairly good energy optimization into it. The Note 5 works well for daily tasks like attending calls, checking on WhatsApp and social apps like facebook, twitter etc. It also is ideal for video binging and not worry about battery drain. Casual games play very well but struggle against graphics intensive games. I was able to play PUBG mobile but not without lags and frame drops, understandably it runs on low graphics settings by default.
The call quality is good, the loudspeaker is fairly loud. Being an Android One device, the phone is quite brisk compared to other phones running on the same chipset.

Battery life of Infinix Note 5

A massive 4500mAh battery must be reassuring for those who need a good battery backup in their phones. With Note 5, you can easily sail past 2 days and stretch it more depends on your usage. The phone comes with an 18 watts charger and the big battery manages to go from 0% to 100% under 150 minutes. Definitely, the battery is the strongest point of the Note 5.

Camera performance of Infinix Note 5

12MP rear camera

16MP selfie camera

Now to the camera part of the review. There is portrait mode, beauty mode, panorama, manual mode and the selfie camera also gets a bokeh mode. The Google Lens in baked into the camera app. There is LED flash for the selfie camera also. Note 5 supports video up to 1080p, there is no EIS.
Coming to the image quality, it’s definitely an above average shooter, of course, there is some better camera Smartphone in this price segment. The images come pretty good, the background blur is acceptable too. The pictures have fairly good detailing, the color reproduction is good too. The edge detection though is poor. The selfies are much better.

Verdict:

Infinix Note 5 is a decent phone but what works majorly for the phone is its massive battery life. If you prioritize battery as a primary need in a Smartphone, the Infinix Note 5 would make you happy.]]>
