IDC has outed their research data for 2012 top 5 smart connected device vendors with devices including desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. It’s a mother of all hardware battles and Samsung with a whooping 119.3 % year to year increase gets crowned as the undisputed ‘smart’ devices manufacture-vendor. Trailing Sammy is Apple, with Lenova, HP and Dell at a distant third, fourth and fifth place respectively.
The year 2012 saw over a 1.2 billion units being shipped, an increase of 29.1 percent from 2011. Thanks to its dominating Android smartphone presence, Sammy saw an eye-popping 119.3 % increase in shipments this year. Smartphones and tablets accounted for 60 percent of the year’s combined marketshare, that explains why companies like Lenova, HP and Dell who almost slept through the mobile-era were pushed way down in the race with PCs and notebook shipments dipping down by 4.1 and 3.4 percent, respectively.
The chart below gives the split of various devices in the category, pointing to the hand-held device’s rising dominance and sluggish sales of desktops and laptops.
